Figure-8 swing
« on: March 02, 2009, 01:29:35 AM »
I've heard of the term "figure-8 swing" on a few occasions, but still I have no idea what it is. Would anyone please describe how it's done (better with illustrations) and explain the pros and cons?
Many thanks!

Actually, this means that the bowler's backswing and forward swing are not on the same line thus making a figure 8 from beginning to end of the swing. This is like pro golfer Jim Furik's swing. This is not recommended by coaches because it is difficult to line up your shot when the forward swing is not in  line with the back swing. However, using this technique, Jim Furik is still one of the best golfers in the world. The important thing is to be able to repeat your swing.

Big Wes (bowling) uses a figure-8 swing. At the end of his follow through, his elbow passes closest to his body allowing him to 'work the inside of the ball' effectively. This makes it pretty hard to chicken wing the ball, or 'work the outside of the ball'.

Yeah Wes does this.  If you can get a rear view of him throwing a shot you'll notice that his backswing goes to the right and then he pulls it back in on the follow through creating a figure 8.  A really hard swing to duplicate, but if you can do it, you'll almost never miss left

Its not a very drastic figure 8 as you might be thinking.  Think more of how the swing is a continous thing with no real pause or stop (sort of like a roller coaster approaching an up hill with and immediate downhill)  As you reach the top of the swing there is a slight loop at the top, then the down  swing.  This is were you get that effective inside the ball technique.

There was a lefty in the 80's who really used an exaggerated figure-8. Someone here should remember his name (to see on youtube).

Thank you for all the inputs.

Actually I have been employing the figure-8 swing UNINTENTIONALLY. This has led to excessive hand movements at the top of the backswing, which I've been trying to get rid of.

Now that I've learnt about the term "figure-8 swing" I'd like to know if this kind of swing really has its advantages over the conventional straight swing. A figure-8 would provide more leverage by working the inside of the ball and never misses left, but how about a straight one? If I keep my hand on the inside of the ball throughout the stance and approach, wouldn't it be as good as the figure-8 minus the useless hand movements on the top of the backswing?

Thanks again!

Is it possible to play up the boards with a figure 8 swing?
