Getting Better or Getting Lucky
« on: February 06, 2015, 10:22:54 AM »
Whichever the case, it's feeling pretty good!!  I've had three weeks in a row now with a 600 Series, with last night being a personal best; games of 213, 215 & 243 for a 671 Series!!    And over the last 4 weeks I've raised my average 5 pins; 184 to 189.  Not sure what I'm doing different, but it feels good!!  Both physically and mentally!!  Kinda like I've finally broken through some type of invisible barrier.....  Or finally gotten over that mental block that was keeping me from putting together three good games.   I'm sure I'll have bad nights, but hopefully they will be fewer and farther between.

Congrats! Sometimes things just start clicking, and you get into something of a "zone." Ride the wave as long as you can, and don't get too down if things taper off a bit down the road. The key is to try to determine what is allowing you to be more successful during this run so that you can try to keep it going long-term. In any case, enjoy it while it lasts!

Nice job!  Gene Kanak has given some excellent advice.  Success breeds confidence which breeds more success.

Stay relaxed, even if things don't gel right away.  It's difficult to relax when you're not seeing enough strikes, however it's imperative to throwing lots of strikes in the first place.

Trust in your ability to "bowl like you do" instead of trying to be something less natural.  The only sure thing is that you'll go through cold streaks (or slumps) as well as the hot streaks.  It's part of belonging to the human race.  The best bowlers find a way to remain positive mentally throughout the bad games so they can rebound quickly and on to another good one.  Best wishes to you.

Thanks for the replies and words of encouragement.  One piece of advice that I've read countless times that I'm trying to follow is to approach the game one frame at a time and not let a bad frame, whether it was because of something I did wrong or just due to bad luck (karma??) and the pins didn't fall the way I thought they should have, let that effect the next frame or the rest of the game.  Sometimes that's easier said than done, especially when you know you've nailed it and that one pin is left standing.  Or worse yet, you're left with a split.  But at that point all you can do is pick (or try to pick) the spare and move on.  I think frustration was/is my biggest enemy because I would make adjustments when I really didn't need to, trying to force the ball into the pocket instead of just making a nice smooth delivery, hitting my mark and letting the ball do the work.

Thanks again!!

Great bowling. While on this hot streak I recommend getting up there and video taping yourself by any means possible.

At least one or two games for strikes and spares so you can have that for reference later. Having videos of yourself bowling good, and bowling bad are very important and helpful tools
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

When we throw that great shot and something's left standing, instead of being "devastated" and looking for someone to tell you "you were robbed"  just tell yourself "opportunity for a spare" and then make it.

So often your attitude when facing anything less than perfection will determine whether you go home satisfied with the night and your efforts, or staying up all night wondering what you shoulda coulda mighta done differently.

Try tracking your shots honestly for a few weeks and you'll probably find out that the good breaks outnumber the bad breaks.  We just tend to dwell on the negative instead of the positive...
