Modern-day bowling column trends: good or bad?
« on: June 27, 2011, 09:37:57 AM »
Is it a good thing when the content of newspaper bowling columns turns away from coverage of competitive bowling in favor of such things as Xtreme bowling and breakfast specials?

I used to think that ANY kind of PR that bowling got was a good thing but I'm not so sure now. I prefer articles about bowling to be of a serious nature.

Are you worrying about what's good for the newspaper running the column, or is it strictly a bowling perspective thing?

Of course the newspaper is going to run the column directed at the biggest market possible. Bowling columns are little more than filler for the sports page, always have been. A small sector may be interested in a "serious" bowling article, but, if "Joe Blow" thinks there might be a mention of his awesome night of "DISCO" bowling there, you will have a lot more people reading that article. More readers reading more articles=money in the newspapers pockets, period.

You've got 1.4 million bowlers NATIONWIDE that are sanctioned, so might be considered somewhat serious. Otherwise, everyone else that goes bowling sees it as a recreation, and not a serious sport, so would view any article in any newspaper through those same eyes.

Is it a good thing when the content of newspaper bowling columns turns away from coverage of competitive bowling in favor of such things as Xtreme bowling and breakfast specials? Maybe not, but I don't think its as detrimental a thing as it might sound at first. You get more recreational bowlers reading the column, maybe a few go bowling more often because of it, maybe a few of those join leagues and become "serious" bowlers, and the numbers of "serious" bowlers starts to go up.

Dear The Bowling Parish:

One thing we agree on is our opinion that many newspapers use bowling only to fill space.

Bowling is treated with far less respect -- in almost all media outlets -- as compared to other sports. In my opinion, bowling deserves much more respect and recognition, but obviously many others -- including newspaper sports editors -- disagree.

In my opinion bowling columns should be about bowling leagues and tournaments and not about laser bowling or nothing but bowling alley promotions. In an ideal world bowling would get lots of newspaper coverage including all local tournaments and good scores bowled, but I'm sure a lot of places don't even have a local bowling column in their hometown newspapers. I think that a bowling column should stick to bowling and such things as cosmic and laser bowling should be covered in the feature or entertainment portions of the newspaper. Just my 2 cents.

Without a doubt, in many newspapers, it's more likely that you can find European soccer results than the results of a PBA tournament or honor scores rolled by local bowlers.

I must admit our association does see a pretty fair amount of press in the newspaper. Our association is in a town of 75,000 and has five(5) houses.......three of which send honor scores to the daily newspaper. Results of our city tournament and other local tournaments are also mentioned.

maybe it's  a regional thing. my city paper sponsors a city-wide handicap tournament. and has so for about 50 yrs. also we have regular write-ups for HS results. weekly honor scores are posted from the area. maybe you should voice your concerns / ideas to the sports editor.

I wish all areas had newspaper bowling reports.
