So my local centre has decided to cut cost……
« on: January 17, 2009, 01:16:37 AM »
Our league president has been informed by the management that as from next week, the lanes will only be dressed three times a week - before Monday league, before Thursday league, and Friday or Saturday morning. The official reason given was to reduce cost (of lane conditioner etc).

Guess from now on I will only need to bring my XXXL to practice huh?!?! My local centre is only five minutes drive away, the next nearest three are all 35-45 minutes away, so I don’t have much choice.

On another note, in the last eight months our league pattern had been long and heavy with next to no movement at the backend. It is also very tight and out-of-bound outside the 8 board. Three weeks ago the mechanic and our league president had been experimenting different patterns, and have settled with (for now) 32 feet. It’s not so bad cos the volume is med-heavy, and it holds up pretty well. Still out of bound outside, but if I control my ball speed well, there is 4-5 board area at break point. My score has gone up a bit, so all is not lost!

Have your centre been cutting cost as well?

No.  I can't imagine my house doing that.  There would be a mass exodus from all the leagues

I would hand my two week notice in and quit bowling there if that happened here.

I REGULARLY drive 1.5 hours to practice in a different center. (then again I have no life, no one but my kids when they decide to visit and no pets) so I guess I can afford it.

That sucks man, just make the best of it. My local alley (doesn't deserve to be called a center) has done something similar but this is year 4 of it. They oil the lanes on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays if they have travel league or tournament.

They strip the backends on the other days/nights. Its absolutely garbage here, the shot is pretty good fresh but once it breaks down its bad and if your on a night where they aren't fresh forget about it.

That kind of thing happens all the time in some centers.  If you go back to the old days, lanes were run once and two shifts bowled on it.  Now many centers have only one shift per night.  Sometimes mechanics experiment with a new pattern to help make the lanes more stable.  There are many times and reasons centers change lane oil cycles.  Saving money is not a bad thing either.  Oiling less saves labor and materials.  The key is if you can put out a quality shot consistently.  Next year when your lineage goes up think about it.  Many bowlers do not understand oiling lanes at all.  They can not tell you anything about the oil pattern or the lane.  All they want to know is if you oiled the lanes.  It's a mental thing.  Don't know or care how you did it just did you do it?  If you tell them "gee I don't know", they are in sure terror.

I was thinking the same thing...is lane conditioner so expensive that they can't afford to oil more than three times/week???  If they are in that bad of shape financially, they may as well close the doors...

another great saving plan is don't oil the left side!

I've been going to a center with that philosophy for 4 years in preparing for the upcoming recession/depression?

I bet other centers are taking similar action. I don't even take my Cell out of the bag anymore.

Is oil the last resort? My house fired the two younger waitresses last year. And I hated that!

That's the absolute WRONG AREA to cut costs on. Over the course of a month their savings aren't as big as they think, and what will really happen is that they will also cut their profits!!

A place with good conditions has happy bowlers.
Happy bowlers come back during the week and spend their money practicing, buying soft drinks, you name it... Chase them away, and find out how difficult it is to get them back.

They'd be better off slightly raising the cost for open play, especially during prime hours, with discounts during less busy parts of the day. But to take away the reason that bowlers come to their establishment (instead of a competitor) is stupid.

Uh-Oh!  Here comes the Lefty WHAAAAA-MBULANCE!

I don't think this is a good long-term strategy.  If bowlers are like they are reputed to be (just want to show up, have fun, and SHOOT BIG SCORES while NOT HAVING TO THINK ABOUT OR ADJUST TO THE LANE CONDITION) then this guy is doomed.  What he saves in oil he will spend double on kleenex from all thy crying and boo-hooing.  He will be lucky to have one league left at the end of the season.  Just look at Sport Bowling and the PBA leagues, that's about all he will have left on his regular leagues - the same 3 guys that actually show up to BOWL and accept challenging conditions.

Seriously though, I'd think he could at least he could go back to the short oil days and apply 24 foot of oil to keep the heads playable and if not strip, then at least drag the backends to help out a little there.
