Will Jason Belmonte win the Player of the Year?
« on: May 08, 2012, 04:38:21 PM »
Do you think he will win it this year?  He was second in points behind Sean Rash, had 3 PBA wins, and finished all top 10 in every major.  It's a vote this year so hard to tell.

Jason gave us a live interview via Skype and made his case.

I'd give it to Rash too.  I think it's pretty hard to argue with Pts Leader/ Average Leader/ Earnings Leader / Winning biggest Tournament of the year,  (TOC) / Getting screwed in the WSOB PBA World Championship Finals Format and yet still making it to the final 4-some.

I am not a Rash fan, but my vote would still be for Rash.

Like Brickguy, I'm not a big Rash fan, but after the year he (Rash) had and considering all  the stats, I couldn't find a reason to vote for Belmo.  So, Rash got my vote.

Looking at the whole picture, POY should be going to Fagan.  Belmonte a close second.

If player voting decides it NO way.  Too many of them hate 2 handed bowling.

Now should he?  Different question.

Rash will run away with it. When you have guys like Bo and DeVaney who struggle to hide their disgust for Belmo, it's a slam dunk.

POY is decided by the players this season.  So, as i mentioned above, Fagan should win it.

I am thinking there is something not right, if Belmo is NOT given fair consideration.

It's tough to call since it's a players' vote.  I don't think we will know who was given a "fair shot" but all three have statistics to back up their seasons.  I hope that the dislike for 2-handed bowling on tour is not a factor in the decision making since I don't believe it should.  But when it's a vote, personal opinions surely come into play.

I'm not sure it's a political thing, but I think it would do more for the sport's image if Belmo won than any of the others.  I don't know the bowlers personally, but did have a chance to speak with Belmonte one on one obviously.

I don't know the intention of moving it to a vote, but I imagine that it allows for intangibles to come into play.

I certainly agree with your statement about having a fair shot.  Lets look back in the 90's when PDW tore up the tour and had a couple of seasons where he had the stats to become POY hands down.  The vote was by the members.  As we all know, he has never won a POY.  You can't please everyone when it comes to voting for POY be it points or by member voting.

Also, let me comment a little further.  PDW was placed on the ballot for POY this season.  Members do not have the ability to choose among all of the players as they only place certain bowlers on the ballot.  You can't even 'pencil' in a person.

I voted for Belmo. If Rash had won at least 1 of the WSOB tournaments, he would have gotten my vote, albeit reluctantly. If Fagan, Duke or Weber had won the TOC, they would have gotten my vote. I look at (in this order) wins, major wins, average, TV appearances, cashes. I don't consider money won anymore due to the frequent changes in top prize money.
