Your Thought On Re-Rating
« on: March 16, 2012, 02:09:01 PM »
Just wanted to hear your thoughts on Re-Rating bowlers while bowling a tournament. I believe this concept is a bad idea because any bowler can get hot and bowl over his/her avg any given day.. Also some houses are allot easier to score then your main house..

Whats your thoughts...

If it's a King of the Hill Tournament or held weekly, then definitely re-rating is a must.  There are several local King of the Hill tourns in the summer around me and I don't even bother.  I have to shoot 720+ scratch to even make the first cut.  And if I do make the cut, now i'm giving crazy pins in each match.   I get 21 total pins over 3 games.  Guys are getting 60-100 pins over the same three.  Guys come in with 180 avgs. and shot 630+ 80hdc and its 710.  I have to shoot 690 just to beat that one guy.  Now if he gets on a roll and shoot 670-680, i have to shoot 740+  When that happens week after week, the only answer is to rerate bowlers with this "new" avg.

Balls in the bag and order they come out:
#1/2 Nano and Anarchy #3/4- Virtual Energy/Polished VG   #5-Big Hit (spare and really dry)  #6- Gravity Shift
#7- Teal Rhino Pro (oldie but a goodie)

I am not talking about King of the Hill tournaments or weekly tournaments... I am talking about actual tournaments that when you shot over your book avg the people who are running the tournment has the right to increase your avg @ will..

How do you win because I thought the only way you can win a tournament is 2 shoot over your avg..  Just a thought...

I thought rerating could only happen before a tournmant? It would seem wrong that someone's average can be adjusted in the middle or at the end of a tournament.

The concept of rerating someone is they are notified of their new average before the tournament starts. Then the bowler has the decision to participate in the tournament. If the choose not to bowl then they get their entry money and go home.

i wish there was a data base that the usbc would create that all of your tournament scores would show a history of what you bowled in the past. it should show what type of tournament & what type of pattern you bowled on if it wasn't a house shot. that way tournament directors could have that to go by to see if there is any sandbagging history involved.

for example: to protect your tournament avg. you enter a cheap tournament and tank(avg. management). enter the higher dollar tourney & bowl to your ability.(win bigger money)

something needs to be done, because i think it's hurting tournaments in an already hurting bowling industry.

Ok I've got it now.  I thought you meant it was a weekly tournament.  Once you start a tournament your avg.  should be set. No rerating during a tournament.  That's rediculous!  So the guy who is leading the tournament gets a lower hdcap for bowling well?  That doesn't seem logical.

If there is any kind of money to be won then its a sure bet someone in the tournament is going to cheat. Handicap Tournaments (Especially ones with a THS) are breeding grounds for tournament sandbaggers.

Its funny but you hear complaining no matter what you do. Have tournament with THS...Noone shows up because of the sandbaggers. Have one with a tough oil pattern...again noone shows because they don't like bowling on a tough condition. Its always a lose lose situation.

the yearly / biggest handicap doubles tournament just ended in my city. all teams knew going in that when they hit the last 16, they were going to be re-rated (even if it was just +1). so all bowlers were rated to their respective tournament average. and if you made the final 16 last year, you entered this year with your prior year's average from the tournament. furthermore, in match play rounds, teams were matched based on handicap (until the final 16, where draws were random).

given all that, you can bet there were still plenty of complaining about sandbaggers. the tournament director does his best to eliminate it - but nothing is perfect when you mix in handicap.

I agree that re-rating should not occur in the middle of a tournament.  But, there is usually a clause stating the tournament director has the right to re-rate as necessary.  I was a victim to this back in the late 80's.  I joined a club and had an entering average.  All verified.  No sandbagging.  As I practiced more and more, I became a better bowler.  While bowling these tournaments, my average started to increase with this club as they started to adjust my average based on the tournament games.  They normally bowled and houses that didn't take that good of care of the lanes.  I had been bowling with this club for about 7 months.  I had shot a few honor scores in league before I bowled this one tournament.  I won that tournament and during that tournament I shot another honor score.  The next weekends tournament, I bowled well in qualifying.  I came back the next day to bowl the semi's and the tournament director approached me and advised me I was being re-rated prior to the semi's.  I had questioned this and advised them I understand about having to re-rate me but how can you re-rate me in the middle of a tournament.  I stated I can understand if it would be for future tournaments but not in the middle of one.  Of course, they pull out the by-laws and sure enough there was this clause.  Now, as most clubs go, if you are not in the 'in crowd' of the tournament director, you can get screwed multiple ways.  I had also expressed my concerns about others who haven't been re-rated and they always seem to make the semi's most weeks and always seem to have the same average.  Needless to say, when I bowled the semi's I bowled good but missed making the stepladder finals by 8 pins.  Had I not been re-rated, I would have made the finals.  I bowled in this club for the next month and decided enough was enough.

NABI has done this with their tournaments, but you have to average 190 or less to bowl them!!! I don't bowl handicap tournament so I don't have to worry about this!!! Just my $.02, Bruce

Train a child up in the way they should go and when they are old they will do some "Damn Good Bowling", be a "DV8" and not turn from it, besides bowling starts with a Big B!

I stopped bowling handicap tournaments too after that.  Then bowled PBA tournaments and eventually stopped all together in 1997.  I re-started bowling again in 2002.  Joined a different club bowled for 2 months just so I can get my feet wet again(didn't want to blow too much money) for bowling any type of tournaments and quit and started bowling in scratch tournaments and also the PBA again.

once play begins it is unacceptable. Once play begins quit whining shut up and bowl
if you don't want the guy that needs to re rated in knock him out of the tourney
