So what's next?
« on: January 04, 2012, 12:50:50 PM »
With all of the talk that the PBA is going away (which I can easily believe with all the last ditch efforts they've been throwing out the last couple of years) , what would come after that? Think the national tour would go by the wayside and just regional action? Is there someone out there that would want to put on a tour that didn't make the top players in the world look like clowns and pro wrestlers? Someone that could actually get DECENT money for the guys that spend weeks away from their families to (barely) support them?

What would happen if the PBA wasn't around tomorrow.

Thoughts and speculation welcome. No ones honest opinion will be lambasted by me.

It will always come down to money and sponsorship. Whoever puts up the cash will dictate whether it's a circus or a bowling competition aired.
I hope they can keep the current tour going, and make improvements too, but it will always depend on keeping entry fees somewhat affordable to encourage more participants, which may require money from other sources.

Would anybody put on a Tour that doesn't make the players look like clowns or pro wrestlers?  When does that happen on the current Tour?  There has to be a reason for people to watch.  There has to be enough people to watch to attract sponsors.  There have to be enough sponsors to bring money to the tour.  The old way of broadcasting bowling to the old folks home on a SATURDAY afternoon with a couple of guys with all the excitement of funeral directors won't cut it today.

Why do you bring how long players are away from family and what they earn?  It's there choice.  Over the road truckers are gone for weeks at a time also.  It's their choice.

It's been said that and it is true that water finds it's own level.  In the case of the PBA, it might have found it's own level based on what today's sports environment looks like.  Nobody's fault, just the way it is.

This topic has been chewed on and chewed on.  The real answer is the Tour will go nowhere until the players themselves take ownership.  Just like they did in the beginning.  The players have to decide what they are willing to do to bring it back.  The players need to hire a marketing company and a production company that will pay attention to what the viewers want to see and produce a show that they can market and sell to broadcasters.  The players need to decide that going up against college basketball, college football, NASCAR, and the NFL is not the way to go.

I agree with SnL. The Tour needs to realize espn doesn't care about 'em. Maybe explore a deal with the new NBC Sports Network (former versus)? At least maybe NBC wouldn't openly mock the PBA.

Yeah, it really pissed me off that we couldn't even get equal air time with Belmo's perfect game. Instead ESPN is openly mocking the PBA. I so hope the PBA grows a pair and moves to NBC Sports.

What did I miss?  How did ESPN openly mock the PBA?

Strider,

I can't say for sure what they mean about this scenario, because I don't get the Sunday PBA broadcasts in Canada here (no ESPN ). But in the past, when Berman and the NFL Countdown were on before the PBA, they would always be sarcastic and almost demeaning in the way they announced that the PBA was coming up next. In fact I can remember one time where either Tom Jackson or Chris Carter were actually laughing out loud as Berman announced that bowling was coming up next. That may be what they are referring to.

It makes sense: NBC should be looking to expand its sports platform for the new network.

no espn b/c there's not enough Canadian content?

Spider,

We have TSN. It's equivalent to ESPN, does show more sports Candians like, hockey, curling, etc. They do actually show the bowling, but it is on Tuesdays at like Noon. If forget the DVR, no bowling for me. It has it's own Sportscentre (notice the spelling, lol) with it's own hosts. They do show the ESPN NFL Countdown and football games and the NBC Games. But we also get some NBC affliates from the States, I think Detroit area. Luckily the cable provider offers the Sunday Ticket here, so got to watch all the NFL we wanted, lol.

TSN used to host a bowling tournament that they televised, had Randy Pederson doing color on it in the past. I saw replays of 2009 and 2010, but didn't see anything about it for 2011. So they must like bowling a little bit up here, lol.

Fellas, fellas.  The guys are laughing over a joke that someone says about an upcoming game and they segue to the PBA.  They are not laughing at or about the PBA.

Equal time for a guy shooting 300 and winning 10K?  Peanuts considering today's sports money.  Was a big deal when somebody did it and won 100K.  If you love the sport of bowling, love it on your own terms and quit whining about respect.  C'mon.

Sunshine,

With all due respect, in the incident I was refering to, that was not the case. There was no joke, no one was laughing unil Berman starting talking about what was coming up next on ESPN. He metioned bowling and keglers alogn with a snide comment (which I apologize that I don't remember) and the panel starting laughing. It was Berman's words and the tone he used that brought about the laughter. I just felt that is wasn't professional of them to openly dismiss another show on their network and it has stuck with me ever since. I would have felt the same way no matter what the show was they did that too, it just happened to be bowling.

Here's another problem with the PBA or bowling in general.  This past Sunday's telecast when Josh Blanchard hung up in the thumb and fell in the gutter.  You see articles like this:

Now this is coming from a reporter with no bowling knowledge.   But a couple of days later, a reputable BOWLING ball manufacturer posts on Facebook basically mocking the fall Blanchard took.  And that's coming from people in the industry, why was that because Blanchard wasn't using their equipment?? I don't know but that was pretty classless to post a bowling article basically mocking our game!

Yeah, it's been pretty much all over ESPN and most (if not all) of the sports shows making fun about the fall in the gutter (Around the Horn, PTI and others).

I love the threads with this topic. The same guys that whine that the PBA sucks because there's no money in it and they need to find more money are the same idiots that would never consider the idea of taking $1 from each USBC membership in order to support the PBA (BTW the PGA tour does this).

You want to see the PBA rebound and have these guys actually bowl for money?  An extra $2million + to the prize fund for the year would certainly be a nice start.

Really? <--- this is to all the people going off about ESPN making fun of Blanchard falling. So ESPN has NEVER done blooper reels or the Top 10 Worst Plays?  Yeah you're right, then never show a running that trips coming around 3rd over and over again and they NEVER make fun of it. Get serious people.
