I would hate to think how I would feel if my Freight Train cracked. I have not had a ball crack around the fingers in a long time. I don't think there is a fool proof way to keep a ball from cracking. I will tell you that what I do seems to help. I do use finger inserts and my driller always bevels the finger holes and uses a small amount of glue, too much glue has been known to cause cracking. After the ball is laid out and the finger holes are going to be close to the pin he will move the pattern and drill out the pin which I like. I now have several balls with the pin drilled out.
