Little Rant...

So let me start off by saying I love 900 Global equipment and that is all I have been throwing for a while. But today made me think that I need to look into something from another company. I bowled in a tournament and needless to say the oil dissolved faster than I would have ever thought. SO, I went to my Link and I had a decent look for about 1 game. Then the look was gone and I couldn't get it down the lane unless I moved way in and then it made the shot super tight.

So I end up throwing my friends Onyx Vibe/Lanebreaker and they allowed me to stay quite a bit right of the Link. The Lanebreaker just wouldn't carry. This makes me wonder why everything 900 Global makes is so strong. I know they have the Angles and some other stuff AMF that I haven't thrown. But I just don't understand how they can market the Link and the Lunatic as Lighter oil balls. The Lunatic is a tank on fresh medium oil and hooks way too much for light oil. I just think they need to make something with a super weak resin cover. Like a s20 or something. I just don't see that with there lineup.

If you were further right with an Onyx Vibe and a LaneBreaker than you were with a Link, there is something else at work here. The Onyx Vibe and LaneBreaker are both far stronger than any Link I have ever seen.

I agree with the above statement and last year I can tell you I thought the exact same thing.  But I now have a reactive Hype in my bag and it fits perfectly in that low range.  Hope this helps and good luck.

I would be interested in knowing the relative layouts and surfaces of these balls? If they were nearly the same with similar surface those two (especially the onyx) would be much stronger... Just wondering...

What people dont think about is that Global builds a line up with Amf if you look they comp each other. I went to a presentation with Nick Seifers the head core designer for global and he touched on this about how if you look at global and amf together it is much more of a "complete" aresnal then just one, not saying you cant make a line up with just global or amf, it just seems that they are built to complement one another!

Have you tried modifying the surface in addition to modifying the drilling pattern you use?

My Link is drilled 5x4.5 and is at 2000 polished. Where as the Lanebreaker would equal out to about a 5x3 layout and is 2000 polished as well. The Vibe is 5.5x3 and has a lot of games on it without any surface refresh. I am assuming the Vibe is just in need of oil extraction which made it weaker?? But the Lanebreaker was quite a bit weaker than the Link. I was actually surprised by this as well. For me the Link has always been very strong I actually got a lot of use out of it on all the PBA patterns this summer.

I have a tame drilling on my jazz which in a sense is similar to a link... I believe the reason many times these "weaker" balls are so strong is they save all their energy until they hit the dry boards where they will many times come off much harder then most balls... I have a 1in pin on mine drilled in palm to tame it down as much as I can it is still very strong and angular as well....

Depends on the area of the lane you''re playing.  One thing to remember is that there isn''t a ball surface or characteristic that exists that''s going to go long on a shot has no oil at all.  I find myself pulling out my Break Point Pearl and playing tighter outside angles with different breakpoints to keep my ball going long.  If I start off at 10 at the arrows out to 5, I may end up moving my line to 11 at the arros out to 7 or 8, to keep using the oil.  Even if I threw plastic up the 10 to 5 line in the third game it''s going to hook.

I did a lot of research and testing with pin placements, surfaces, light oil low flaring balls, plastic balls with cores, etc.  The best thing is to learn to adjust your break point, and don''t get in the habit of staying in one spot for too long.

Could it be that the reason the more aggressive equipment appeared less aggressive was because you had move further right thus encountering less head oil resulting in the balls reading the lane sooner and burning energy? That would be my take on why the vibe and l/b seemed less aggressive and especially since the l/b had less carry than the vibe. Also, moving left with the link would allow it to remain more in the oil and use less energy up front, giving it a stronger reaction at the break point. Kind of misleading when you see your low end equipment out hooking the high end or mid line equipment. I don't see this as 900/AMF making all equipment so strong. I do say a lot of the equipment they put out is slightly stronger than the number they give it. Never under-estimate the power of a s-30 link. Could go with a smoke or urethane hype for something a touch weaker or take the surface up to 4K w/ polish on the link.

If you were able to play right farther with the Vibe you should have been able to play right with the link as well.

Maybe a trick layout on the Vibe to mellow it??

Here's the winning post. ^^^

The Vibe probably burned up a good bit in the first 20 feet and made it appear like it was weaker. Using less surface on dry lanes is not always going to do the job.

If the OP is determined to get a 900G-poured ball to fit in with these and be weaker than all, though, I have a couple of suggestions: Lane #1 Chainsaw or Seismic Desperado. Especially the urethane pearl Desperado.

If I'm not mistaken, the Link is sanded 600 then polished with 2000 in OOB whereas the Vibe and Lanebreaker are 4000 abralon, then polished. Perhaps sanding the LInk to 4k and then polishing may produce the desired result.

Desperado is not a Pearl. It has Silicone in the cover to get it down lane more.
