RH Tweener with above avg ball speed and revs 210+ avg.
Just drilled up the Clutch with expectations of being a medium oil ball to fit in my arsenal. Layed it out Pin above ring finger with CG kicked out for length and strong backend reaction.
I threw a few balls and got massive ball reaction with unbelievable overall hook. Thought maybe coverstock wasn't correct. Hit it with 4000 abralon and shined it. Still had same reaction. Killed my hand and the ball still hooked. Ball reference did not lie about continuos hook.
For a mid-priced ball it hooks more than any of my high-end equipment. I will be testing it in my PBAX league on Shark and see if I get the same reaction.

AMF Clutch (color blem)
14 lbs 3 oz gross weight
3.25 oz top weight
3-3.5 “ pin

Drilling layout: 4-1/2 (P2P) x 5-3/4 (MB 2 PAP)
Pin up: at 1:00 to ring
MB in the thumb
X-hole in thumb quad, 2-1/2” below midline.
Finish – Box Finish

Oil Pattern: Freshly oiled THS, wood lanes, with squeaky back ends, medium - heavy volume inside of 12, 50 units at 4th arrow,  42 ft buff.

The Clutch is the strongest ball AMF has produced IMO, even with the higher rg core number it has plenty of mid lane roll with an explosive motion off the spot. Most bowlers who do not see heavier volumes of oil will have difficulty using this ball even though it has a 4000 finish. The cover is the strength of the ball, it responds to friction similar to the Bounty Hunter, it reads the pattern very well, I saw no over under and did not expect it with a solid veneer. I saw plenty of oil flare rings, producing 5” of flare, more than enough hook potential by anyone’s standards. When others on the same pair ran into the transition and began to be affected by carry the Clutch kept motoring on handling it like is never existed.

I began the night using all the oil I could find available, standing 40 set down was 21-22 with the break point at 10-8. Anything outside of 8 the Clutch found too much friction causing it to over shoot the pocket or be very high flush, I tripped a few 4’s and had a messenger get me out of a 4-9 situation. A two board tug would yield a flat ten. The angularity off the spot is awesome, not a S/S reaction but for a solid a very strong angular motion.

As the night wore on the ball speed was bumped up to keep it from running away, hand position changes were made to promote more skid up front to keep her in play. I had a very productive night for the 1st night out with the Clutch carry was excellent, even questionable hits carried with mixers and messengers flying from both sides of the pin deck. The Clutch is for heavier and longer volumes of oil, anyone purchasing it will find it almost useless at box finish on medium and shorter oil unless you have very high ball speed. The Clutch is the “real deal” it meets and exceeded my expectations.

First off, I must say that I very seldom review a ball because, well, most of them just aren't that different from any of 20 others.  But the Clutch....wow.  Background on me:  righthanded power tweener, as versatile as a bowler ever needs to be, fairly consistent regional player and owner of a career 100% cash ratio in majors.

The last few years I've been predominantly storm/roto, but have been noticing a hole in my arsenal that apparently Utah doesn't make.  So I began reading manufacturer propaganda and thought the Clutch sounded exactly like what I wanted.  First use was on shark on newish pro-anvil out of the box.  The clutch just laughed at the best I could get out of my Cell or Rogue both at 1000.  Next came the world championship pattern on a very worn surface, I expected it to be too much on this since it handled shark so well but much to my surprise it smoothed out those nasty looks we all love on a fresh sport pattern where you miss by half a rev and either 2-10 or big 4.  Even better, when it was time to put it away for something with more length it told me in no uncertain terms.  Ease of decision making is a good thing.  Next up was scorpion again on the newish pro-anvil.  Scorpion has traditionally been my weak spot with the increased volume down lane.  The Clutch rolls right up and shows off that continuation better than it was even promoted.  It allows me to turn the corner like the 450+ rev guys can do on downlane volume or even provides an amazing look off the gutter.

Now I realize this review is not filled with technical numbers that we are so fond of now.  There was a time I based all my ball changes and layouts off of all that too, but I've found for me going with the feel approach and what I see rather than what I'm SUPPOSED to see works so much better.  I tried 4 different balls, all of which you will see on tv and all of which were supposed to be strong, smooth & continuous, but at best they could only get 2 of the three.  The clutch has them all.  This is hands down the ball of the year if more people would just throw it.  Back to my feel approach, for the most part I go with only 2 layouts now, this one is pin above and right or ring, stacked, mass bias just above thumb, low x hole.  One other note of interest.   It took until the 6th frame of game #12 on the ball before it left a "tap".  The pins stay very low with this ball, no wasted energy by flying....but that would be expected with the continuous roll all the way through the pins this ball generates.

Congratulations AMF you have an incredible piece.

Originally I was looking for a ball to fill the gap between an AMF Code and AMF Night Hawk Pearl.  Well, as time went by, the plan changed to getting a ball that could handle a bit more oil, while working instead on the surfaces of the Code and NHP to lessen the gap that way.  After getting some excellent ball selection and drilling advice from Eric Thomas and Steve (aka tekneek), I went with the Clutch.  And am I glad I did.
Ball is drilled 5x5 with pin down, which puts the pin under the ring finger(I'm a lefty), with CG just above the thumb and MB to the left of the thumb.  I left the OOB surface.
Bowled the first games last night in league, on a THS, but with the right lane playing more like a long-oil pattern and the left lane like short oil.  In any case I had to stand seven boards farther left on the right lane compared to the left lane.  What stood out most was that on either lane the Clutch got through the heads easily and made a strong, yet very controlled move to the pocket.  And it didn't matter if there was lots of oil or very little.  Very impressive!  The Clutch hit with authority and I kicked out many a 7-pin.  In fact I ended up shooting 913 for 4, which for me is a very nice set.
I think the Clutch is an ideal ball for bowlers like me that don't have a tremendous amount of speed and hand.  It will be my benchmark ball from now on.  A great ball no matter what the price, but at its price, it's a real winner.
Thanks again to Eric and Steve for their help.

Drilled a Clutch yesterday and I really like this ball by AMF! This ball actually moves more than I thought it would and I used a dual angle layout. I went with a 55deg x 3-1/8" x 35deg which placed the pin right of my ring finger and the mb about 1-1/2" right of my thumb. I placed a weight hole in the P3 location that is 13/16" x 2-1/2". It get down the lane with ease and has a strong move at the break point. This will be my med/heavy oil ball below my Bounty Hunter and Mega Recovery! I had the Invasion and for a mid-priced ball I like the Clutch better! Just my $.02, Bruce
