Sanding & Repolishing a Heist
« on: June 19, 2008, 09:55:41 AM »
I got my Heist chewed up a bit on the lanes today somewhere in the back end. The other 9 people I was bowling with had their balls damaged also. The abrasions weren't deep however, but the ball was "skinned up" in several places.

Sooo, I need to re-sand the ball to get rid of the "skinned-up" places and then re-polish the ball to try to get it back to NIB condition.

What grit sanding before polish does the Heist have?  400-500-800-1000-etc????

After sanding to the proper Grit, I plan on polishing with 3M Finesse-It II unless someone has a better suggestion and if you do, please advise as I am all ears here as I love this ball.

OOB is 1000 grit with Rough Buff. The best way to pull your ball back to New is a Resurfacing machine starting with 180, 220 500 then 1000 abralon. As far as Polish goes, Ebonite Factory Finish puts a durable gloss on your ball but my prefered way is sanding 4000 Abralon on an Ebonite or Haas resurfacing machine.

900Global is using Brunswick's Rough Buff, or did someone suggest this?

The standard is 1000 grit (US) and rubbing compound. I'd suggest Track's Clean and Sheen.  Rough Buff is extremely aggressive.

on my first heist i started off with 180, 360, 500 then 1000 (all abralon) and then used 3m finesse-it with very light pressure. with my other heist i did the same sanding procedure like the first one. instead of using 3m finesse-it, i used storm's pro finish compound step 2 with light pressure (the shop i went to didn't have anything else there). i personally think i got a better finish with my second heist.

Charlest, thanks for the information. After sanding the ball, I'm going to try the Track Clean & Sheen first. I bought a bottle of it 3 years or so ago, used it one time on something and forgot I even had it.

Make sure you shake it a LOT, for a long time, if it's been sitting for more than a month. There's a lot of Abrasive that needs to be mixed back in.

It's good stuff over a 500/600/800 (US grit) baseit smoothes out some sanding lines leaves a light polish. DO NOT overdo the rubbing and pressure.
