Desert Hook
« on: June 30, 2013, 06:24:18 PM »
Anyone on staff got a Desert Hook ? Been waiting for ball that will excel on light to dry lanes. Seems like the only ball missing in their current line up. Carlos

Well, let's look at some numbers here.

Numbers for the Link (S30)
15       2.610    0.030    0.005

Numbers for the Desert Hook (S30)
15 lb       2.61    0.026

Same RG, lower diff, no mass bias. S30 is plenty weak when there's any oil, but doesn't boomerang off the dry when there is dry. My Link (R.I.P., Little buddy!) was easily 10 boards weaker than most of my other 900 Global equipment. I had to keep my angles straighter with it than other stuff as well. Now, I wouldn't use resin on bone dry (it is still resin), but it will be much straighter than anything else in the 900 Global/AMF line. Also, the lower diff will not make the ball jump off of the dry either. Can't wait to try one of these out!

My Link was drilled 40x5x65, and it was a great ball. I'm probably going to do about the same thing on the Desert Hook. I had a Desert Heat from Track that was very similar numbers, and drilled that 70x5.5x40, and it was too little unless I was in the dirt. I also laid out a AMF Scamp like the Desert Heat, but since the ball had more diff, I could use it a little more. The angle I could create on the house shot was nice cause I didn't have to go so much left to right.

For me, I can't do a low diff core with a high weak pin placement. Had to be lower for me.

What is your speed and revs, overall?

My speed is about 16 and revs about 275-300. I'm building a relationship with the Desert Hook after about a month of practice. This is a very consistant ball when used on the right condition. For me a fresh shot is a little to much. It really shines after the lanes have been bowled on for about two games. This is just what I have been looking for after several purchases of other dry lane balls. Very good product. Carlos

That Scamp was a lot of core.

Put in all sorts of powerful balls over and over for AMF for many years.
A few of them, Track Spell(medium heavy), AMF Nighthawk SPT(heavier oil), Michael Jorden reactive(I think), medium light, Super Scamp medium heavy.  AMF Hawk.

I've been throwing my Spell lately and have been loving it.  Every one of above I loved except the Super Scamp which I didn't own.

All were about 2.584 rg and .48 diff.  The Track Dry  Heat with much lower diff of .26.

This is why I am always very careful about drilling low diff balls weak, they become very specialized.

.48 diff above AMF slapped about 6 different covers (along with Track I think) and this thing was always sweet poppy and had great carry!

Lefty, you're thinking of the Super Scamp core. I'm referring to the regular Scamp.

Scamp from Bowlers Dream

SuperScamp from Bowlersdream

http://www.bowlersdream.com/amfsuperscamp.html

I stand corrected.  I saw the core and the numbers in the Scamp picture and did not look closely.

I missed that little mass at the bottom in the SuperScamp core that is usually there but was not in the scamp.  The numbers don't differ by much but I do know there was some difference in reaction, usually those with the bottom nugget a little bit flippier if I remember right.

Regardless.  Like some cores from Brunswick which I loved in many balls, I loved that core if I wanted reaction and hit in many different coverstocks.

REgards,

PS still like it!  Thank you Track Spell.

My teammate has a Link which he uses for ten pins. I pick it up and use it when the lanes get toasty. I love it, because I can play straight with it, or bend it at will by adding a lot of hand. Very controllable, consistent and carries well.
