Good Ball for First Timer?

OK, this is gonna sound pretty lame.  Never bowled before -- ever -- yet I'm totally hooked on it because of my Wii bowling game and iphone game AMF Pinbusters.  Two questions, is AMF a good brand (they seem to be) and what type of ball should a complete newbie (31 yo male) buy?  The ones at my local lane don't really fit.  Sorry to barge in on everyone, and thanks for any recommendations.

honestly develope your skills with say a angle or smoke before you go and invest alot of money on a big hooking ball start off with a 100 ball develope you timing and release and approach

It all depends on what you want to do. If it's just to go out and have fun I would suggest like a Target Zone, Maxim something like that. If you want to be a little more involved I would look at the Power Grooves or the Tornado series.

AMF is a fine company.  The brand AMF is actually licensed to 900 Global and 900 makes all AMF bowling balls.

I would start out with one of the entry level balls.  If you wanted an AMF ball go with the Smoke

You could also go with a Tropical Storm from Storm, a Tornado by Ebonite.  Post your location and I'm sure someone can point you to a good pro shop.  Once you find the pro shop, they can fit you for the entry level ball and then give you a couple lessons to get you on your way.  ESPECIALLY for a new bowler, learning proper form will have WAY more benefit than a fancy bowling ball.

I think the best answer is to go to your pro shop and see what he has laying around that is cheap!  

I guess this isn't good business practice, but I wouldn't sell you a new ball.  I would make sure that you get as much fun out of "10 pins" bowling as you do your Wii.

You have your local pro shop guy plug something and drill it for next to nothing.  That way you don't invest a crap load of loot for something that you might not like doing.

I'm sure this will garner a bunch of attention and many will disagree, but if I was your pro shop operator, I have a hoard of old used stuff laying around that I could give away just to get a guy started.  At the most, you would pay for plug and grips (if you went that direction) just to cover the cost of material.
