14lb Shredder and your thoughts on it.
« on: June 09, 2011, 06:32:38 PM »
I have a 14lb Shredder with a Label drilling on it.I have had it for almost a year and barely 20 games on it.I am not happy with the ball.I don't see where the ball is that aggressive.I even dulled the surface down to 2000 abralon dull and instead of hooking more it just seemed to burn up and roll out.Very disappointed in the ball.I have a Clutch thats about a year and a half old currently at 3000 abralon that just blows this ball away. The hook is unbelievable on the Clutch and it is drilled the same way as the Shredder.Thinking of getting rid of the Shredder.Just mot happy with it.Any thoughts on maybe a different drilling or layout for it?I have a Lanemasters Black Pearl that is drilled pretty aggressive as well that just doesn't seem to move either that I am thinking of getting rid of.It doesn't have the backend the Clutch has by any means and thats at 1000 Abralon with a light polish on it.

Looking at your profile, you like to play on the outside on a THS. With that being said, I would suggest either take the surface to 4000 dull or 4000 w/ polish and see what kind of reaction you see with it. The Shredder is quite aggressive and if you combined that with an aggressive layout and playing up the outside, you are going to see the ball burn up way too early! That would be exactly why you see the Clutch Solid at 4000 out hooking your Shredder. Its kind of reverse thinking on these high performance balls. Instead of moving more right when you see less reaction, you really need to start moving left into more oil or if you prefer drop down to a less aggressive ball. These balls need oil to perform as they were intended too. On THS there is quite a bit of friction on the outside and that is why a less aggressive cover will generally outperform the "hookers" on league night. This is a great ball for higher volumes of oil and sport conditions/flatter patterns. If nothing else, plug it and go with a 5" to 5.25" pin to PAP. A layout with a longer pin to PAP will give this ball a little more length without it burning up too soon. Don't give up on it, hopefully you can get this ball to work more effectively for you. Just my 2 cents, good luck!

Take up to 4000 grit and repolish. Dulling it down will get the opposite effect to what you are seeking.

To add to what the others have said,
The Clutch also has a high RG core, around 2.55 (in 14lbs, it's probably higher than that), while the Shredder has a very low RG, around 2.49 in 14 lbs, AND a more aggressive coverstock. The Shredder also has a higher DIfferential, . 054" vs the Clutch's .044".

So it could be you just don't have enough oil to use this ball where you like to play. This is especially true when you sanded it to 2000 grit and left it dull. I could almost guarantee it was using up all its energy early then.

Add in the fact that a label drilling ( you should be more specific, since this is vague at the best of times)  will often place the pin at a very strong point with respect to your PAP.
