Looking for a very versatile, first out of the bag on a THS type ball -- simply put, I want to be able to move around the entire lane with confidence, and be able to only take a few balls to league (at least right now, I just moved to Charlottesville, VA, and the bowling alley is a ways away).

Bowling This Month had both the Radar and the Venom as two of the most versatile balls -- just wondering what your guys thoughts were on these two. Which one do you see as having a more "useable" ball reaction on a wider variety of conditions?

Also, what if I also considered the Radar Lock, with the surface brought up a bit, and the polish left off (something like 4000 abralon?). Could this ball also be seen as a contender?

If it helps, I consider this THS to be a medium length wall with exceptionally dry backends/outside the five board -- it is an older wood house, and honestly, the conditions there range from bone dry to long oil -- thus the need for a very versatile ball.

I would recommed either, but give the edge to the Radar. You can get it to hook on the outside dry when the lanes have more oil, on the old wood house I bowl in I can still get the Radar through the fronts when the lanes break down.

The Radar lock is quite a bit stronger than the Radar, and isn't for drier lanes.

go with the radar lock.

i have had the radar but not the venom.

the radar was more of just a medium oil ball for me. It had great looks on that condition.

i got a radar lock a few months ago. In my opinion, i can open up the lane a little more on the same shot and the carry is a little better in this ball for me. It is the first ball out of my bag, and i honestly don't think i could buy a better ball to take its spot. I will own the radar lock for AWHILE!!!

its drilled with the pin over, and beside the ring. Has about a 4 inch pin and the cg is kicked in under the ring finger. Like i said the radar is a good ball, but i like the LOCK even better, but thats just me. Hey you can't know which one you will like better till you have tried both though!

Both the Radar and the Venom compliment each other very well. When the Radar Burns a little too early or starts hitting weak, most likely because there isn't enough oil in the heads or mids, the Venom is a wise choice to go to. The Venom is very continous and hits very well. The cover of the Venom is clean through the heads and still reads the mids and has a hard arch to the pocket. Remember that the Radar's cover is pretty strong, when a light surface is applied to the coverstock. If you are looking to get the most out of balls that come out of the Columbia plant, I do recommend taking the Factory shine off the cover. Just a Hint. If you feel you need something even stronger than the Radar, go with the Radar Lock. Warning to all though, these covers are strong and will show signs of burn out or weak hit when used on light oil. Use the appropriate ball for the appropriate condition. That is why AMF has an artillery of equipment to fit all lane conditions. Bowl well every Body!

Radar...Is it a solid or a pearl?

I thought it was a solid version of Radar? If not...what are the differences....
Radar...RAdar Lock?

The Radar is the first resin pearl that I would ever use as a benchmark ball.

Lock is a solid version of the Radar, with a slightly lower RG and a slightly higher RG differential for more flare. These features make it a stronger ball suitable for more oil than the Radar.

I've used the Radar standing 30, crossing 17/18 board, going out to 7/8 board at breakpoint, at 42/44 feet. I've also, at the same house, stood 18/20, crossing 9/10 going out to 4/5 board at breakpoint at 40/42 feet, when they oiled more heavily.

The Radar, for me, handles true medium oil and seems to make a great benchmark ball (first pearl I've ever said that about). I suspect the Lock would handle medium-heavy oil. One might want to reduce the level of polish on the Lock but not sand it. These covers are VERY strong.
