Shred-it or omg
« on: July 09, 2011, 10:10:53 AM »
Trying to decide which ball would best fit my arsenal.  I average 15mph with revs to match.  Looking for something a little stronger in oil than anything I currently throw:

In the bag Double Clutch (med-heavy), Double Clutch Pearl (benchmark-med), Favorite (med-light) and Radar (when nothing else is working lol).  I thinking Shred it, OMG, OMG Pearl, Raw Profit, or even Roto Grip Critical Therory.  Anyone with experience with these balls?

In the bag:

900 global bounty hunter

900 global favorite

Roto grip mars

AMF radar (oldie but goodie)

AMF double clutch

AMF double clutch pearl

shredd-it is agreat piece , at 4000 ab oob, can handle plenty of oil , especially with 15 mph,,  the omg is as advertised,  very strong  , i average  a bit over 15mph, and had to put a light polish on the omg, and its plenty of hook in oil from any line, both are good choices, shredd-it might be more versatle,in my own words they complement each other very well, my shredd-it is drilled pin under ring, and my omg is pin over,

hope this helps

Based on what you mention, I would go with the OMG.  The solid cover on that ball is the strongest made by AMF (F84), being much stronger than your Double Clutch (F64).  The OMG is known to give good midlane control with longer or heavier volume patterns and still provide good movement on the backend.  Plus with a little slower ball speed with revs to match, it could become a really good piece in your bag.
The Critical Theory, Raw Profit, and OMG Pearl  are all designed for medium-heavy conditions.  The difference is all of those are stronger than your Double Clutch and Double Clutch Pearl.

The Shred-It would be a nice ball that would fill the gap between the OMG and the Double Clutch.  The hybrid cover actually can help prevent over/under on the transition.

If you decide to revamp part of the arsenal, these would be my suggestions based on what you have and/or what you are deciding for a new ball.  I also listed the ratings from AMF/900Global next to each.

Heavy oil: OMG (F84)

Medium-Heavy (transition): Shred-It (F74)

Medium-Heavy: OMG Pearl (F73), Raw Profit (S70), or Critical Theory
Medium: Double Clutch (F64)

Medium (wet/dry): Radar (F57) or Favorite (S57) - both are similar but like the Radar for wet/dry

Medium-Light: Double Clutch Pearl (F55)

Light: Roto Grip Mars

Hope this helps give a starting point for you.

My arsenal

Medium-Heavy Oil: Storm Anarchy: 1500 polished
Medium Oil: Roto Grip Nomad Dagger: 1500 polished

Medium-Light Oil: Roto Grip Rising Star: 1500 polished

Thanks! Yeah I have heard so many great things about the shred it.  I absolutley love the way double clutch pearl rolls.  But on longer patterns or extreme carry down it struggles to make the turn, looking for something that gives me a similar roll that can handle this.

OMG is a very good ball, it hooks but it is very controllable.
In typing this the Shred-It is a great ball as well, Hybrid cover
best of both worlds, its not as strong as the OMG but is the step down.
OMG will surprise with how it is so smooth,
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the breakdown tommyboy!  This helps alot!  I am trying to build a more complete arsenal.  Funny thing is that I don't find my double clutch solid and my favorite to be as strong as most.  The double clutch solid is drilled pin slightly below ring finger with mb kicked out with med size x hole, it is very slightly stronger than the pearl with a pin up drilling.  I believe the favorite is weaker due to the fact that its 14lbs with a typical pin up drilling ( all my other balls are 15lbs)

That would be a reason with the 14#.  Typically when you go with lighter equipment, it will slightly affect the RG numbers in the core.  Also, the pin down drillings will cause an earlier reaction, which causes the ball to not store as much energy on the backend.  That will cause either the ball to die out and limit the amount of movement, or causes you to leave flat 10s if you're a righty.

If you get the OMG and/or Shred-It, I would go pin-up on both.  This way, you get decent length that is controllable, but store more energy for the backend where movement counts on longer or heavier patterns.  Both of these balls would be a nice step up from the Double Clutch.  If you were looking for lighter oil, then pin-down is a good way to go.

Think I'm sold on the Shred-it!  Maybe the OMG later on.  One more question.  What polish is the closest to oob polished finishes on 900/AMF?

I think you have a good decision on the Shred-It.  It's basically as strong as the 900Global Bank, but gives you the benefit of having the hybrid cover.  1/2 of my arsenal consists of hybrids.  I personally love how they give length but read the midlane earlier than a pure pearl ball.  That helps to prevent over/under that can be seen on certain conditions.  This ball will give you a logical step up from the Double Clutch by giving you probably a good 4-7 more boards of area.  Then, if you still need to cover something with heavier volume or long length patterns, the OMG will give you additional boards on top of that.

Looking at both the AMF and 900Global sites, they actually don't list their specific polish at all.  For my arsenal, I use ReactaShine from Storm.  It will give the polished finish that I like with my Anarchy, but doesn't kill the reaction.  Brunswick also makes some really good polishes that can be used to keep the factory finish.  Just be careful how much you use from any brand.  If you use too much polish on the ball or apply too much pressure, it can easily kill the ball's hooking ability causing a resurfacing to be needed.

Good luck and if you get the Shred-It or OMG, let us know how it works out.

As I have all the balls you are considering I would go with the Shred-it.My ball speed is slightly slower at 14.2 and as a result i have only seen enough oil for the OMG to be effective at OOB  in tournaments. As for the Shred-it I have 3 of them one each pin up and down and one pin down polished which i use as my benchmark ball. As for your polish question i use Snake Oil or Reacta Shine

Don't forget that the Double Clutch has a pretty strong Mass Bias rating. That means it's much more sensitive to proper placement for your desired ball reaction than balls with no or a less strong Mass Bias. If you kicked out the MB too far, it will reduce the amount of backend, which is what I suspect you might have accidentally done with yours. The DC at 4000 grit on medium to medium-heavy oil usually has a pretty strong backend.

In any case, I think the guys steered you right with the Shred-it. If you look at the coverstock rating and the core numbers, you'll easily see it will fit just above the DC in overall hook AND in oil handling. Based on the Shredder, and videos of the Shred-it, that core also gives the Shred-it and pretty strong backend, considering the amount of oil it can handle.

In about 80-95% of the cases with 900Global and AMF, you can imitate their polish by sanding a ball to P1500 or P2000 grit and then  using a non-abrasive polish on it. (If you use an abrasive polish, you will change the underlying grit level.) Plus you can always go to a lower grit under the polish if you need to handle more oil or a higher grit if you need more skid.

I should have a Shred-it on my step tomorrow. I hoping for a ball that reacts the same as my S75 did. Numbers are close, aside from it being symmetric. As far as the polish goes, I like a lower grit abralon (500) then either Storm #2 or Rough Buff. They both give a pretty good imitation of factory. Valentinos Resurrection-> Snake oil works good too.

I can second the fact the 500 grit with Rough Buff works well. Used it on the AMF Big Heist and it worked great. Going to try 1,000 grit with Rough Buff on the AMF Hype next to see if it's close to out of box.

By the way, you won't be sorry with either ball you pick from AMF or 900 Global.
