Bad Master black tape?
« on: March 09, 2006, 02:39:21 AM »
I've been using Master tape (both 3/4" white and black) for years, and never had a problem. Within the past month, however, I've had nothing but problems with the black tape. It's hard to take out, comes out in chunks, and leaves tons of sticky stuff behind- which is a pain to clean out. My pro shop guys noticed this around the same time I did, and thought it might just be a bad batch. They gave me a new box from a brand new batch, and the same problems were there. According to their supplier, there have been "complaints" recently about the tape. Just wondering if anyone else has seen the problem in the same time period. Maybe the adhesive formula was changed or something?

Also, does anyone have a good tape recommendation for 3/4" black? We tried a box of Pro-Grip last night, and it was just as crappy as the Master stuff.

I have noticed the same thing with the black 1 inch bowlers tape, and 1 inch black pro grip tape, its super sticky, can't even use it and I bought a 500 piece roll.  The white tape is fine though.

I have found that the vise tape is better, its the way bowlers tape used to be!

Master's black tape is the absolute worst! Everything you described and more. Btw, Ive never seen a good batch. I discourage its purchase and groan everytime someone asks me to take it out of a hole or clean up the mess it leaves behind. Kudos to the white though.

Where can I look at some Vise tape? I've searched online, but I can only seem to find the protective tape.

This has become very frustrating.  I thought originally the problem was that we consolidated two pro shops into one this summer and stored quite a bit of our inventory in a mini warehouse (non A/C) while we remodeled the shop we were staying in.  I go through quite a bit of black tape, and noticed right away last fall that the tape was not so good.  Some was good, some was not...I figured maybe it was some had been in the warehouse, some had stayed in boxes in the shop (with A/C) while we remodeled.  Until recently, we had no customer complaints (and have sold quite a bit of it, given we had inventory from two complete shops to work with).  We just got a 'new' supply and it's the same and we got a customer complaint.  I'm wondering if somewhere a large batch of this stuff sat on a truck in the heat of the summer and is just 'bad'.   That was the red box bowlers tape (AMF). Just got some new pro grip tape and it does the same thing....UGH.

On a side note, I've found that if you can find a can of the old DBA aerosol approach conditioner, a tiny bit on a kleenex cleans out the gunk in a hurry and leaves the back of the hole nice and clean.  I carry around a can of that now just for that purpose.

I've used the brunswick black tape and had no probs also the vise is good but can't find it in my area pro shops, when I find it they want to preform a surgical procedure on you to pay for it.

Ultimate Black Tape is very good, dosnt come out in chunks, but the glue is strong so it takes about a min to get 2 pieces that are ontop of eachother out.

Just a thought as i work with adhesives alot. You can sand your thumb hole to a smoother grit surface to lower the adhesion level of the tape. This also might help when removing it as the adhesive will not grab to the surface as much. Adhesive sounds too strong or too thick, adhesion to the substrate(tape) should be slightly higher than to the bonding surface. Don't go by feel though as that is tack and peel adhesion is different. For users of black tape have you tried "Slick Tape" it also is a very smooth surfaced tape.

Ask your pro shop operator to get ahold of the VISE tape in black or white.  It's easy to apply and to remove - no mess or residue to clean out.
