Better alternative than Genesis #3?
« on: March 03, 2017, 04:57:02 PM »
I switched to Genesis #3 tape on the back of my thumb from Motiv slow-release since the Motiv left a lot of residue. The Genesis is good, but now that I'm not using any tape in the front, (which I wish I had done a long time ago), I find that the Genesis curls up on the ends when I use multiple pieces. I'm using three pieces now and definitely have some work to do on my inserts as I keep losing weight, but in the meantime... Any one try other options? I've tried Hada.. Not bad, but I liked Motiv better. Motiv's good, but Genesis is better (for me).
Anything out there that's better still? the new Vise tape maybe?

I use Genesis 1-5 (mostly 1-3), depending on the feel I'm trying to achieve. I found that the tape adheres better than most everything else I've tried. Still, I use Benzoin Tincture topical to make sure it stays put. Have you tried Benzoin at least on the edges??

Are you at least using tape in the back if you're not using it in the front? I'm not sure about only using Hada type tape without any regular tape in the thumb hole. If that's what you're doing, why??

I appreciate the thought guys, but I find the curling occurs "mostly", although admittedly not always, on the layers of tape themselves, not where it binds to the skin. Not sure the tincture would work for that, what do you think?
Steven, as to why no tape in the front, that's a bit tough to answer. I've used tape in front for 30 years, but I find now that my thumb is getting REALLY flat and wide. Even the 1 inch tape, carefully placed, still feels awkward lately with my thumb riding an uncomfortable edge. As I learn more about the benefits of a tight thumb, I can see that I've been carrying the ball, gripping that tape for a long time. Soon I'll start going back to using at least some tape on the back. Right now though, I had a Varipapa 300 and also the front nine the next night... I kinda like what's happening and will stick to this for a little while longer.....

Wait you use more than 1 piece of tape on the back of your thumb? I didn't think this tape was designed to work layered like the tape that actually goes in the hole.

Ive admittedly never used benzoin tincture for additional layers of hada type tape, but I don't see where it wouldn't work. It's a sticky compound that dries sticky, so it should help tape adhere to tape. It can't hurt to try.

There are no rules when it comes to taping, so go with what works. However, I've encountered few people who can get by without tape front or back. If you can, you're a lucky guy.

Hi Steven. I don't mean to indicate that I don't need tape front or back. In fact, quite the opposite... However, today's thicker tape pieces made for the thumb have some advantages. Let's face it, whether you tape your thumb or the back of the ball, you're still putting tape in the back of the ball, it's just a different way to do it. For people like me whose thumb changes a LOT, I think it works better. Of course, you have to deal with the issue of tape on thumb coming in varying release speeds, but it's all the same thing, part of getting a good fit. And it actually can be an advantage. Black tape is black tape pretty much, but I can make many more adjustments by changing thumb tape. Three pieces of Gen 3/4 equal 7-8 pieces of black tape (giving a head nod to the fact that all black tapes are not created the same thickness...). I'm really enjoying the flexibility this method provides, if I could only get a little more adhesion. I'll try the tincture and see what happens....

Anyone experience sticking or abrasion issues by having tape on the back of the thumb and tape in the back of the thumb hole? I haven't tried but it seems to me like this would cause issues.

Personally, I've done it a few times with issues, a little worse tape on the back of the thumb alone. But using tape on both sides changes the release friction, so I stay away from it and just use one or the other.
