"The Leather Shammy" Ball Cleaner Showdown video 02
« on: February 19, 2016, 04:40:45 PM »
Okay, Here's my comparison test of a Leather Shammy Pad and a Microfiber Towel.

Synopsis:
The leather shammy pad was more effective at removing surface oil than a dry microfiber towel.

Yes, they cost more. But I think they are all about the same, so if you want to get one, just get a low cost one like this bowlingball.com one or Buddies Etc.

Hit a $1000 strike pot the night I started using one. I think they're really effective when they're new too!

Also the dye from the shammy with turn grips different colors.

Example: the black storm shammy turnes my neon yellow grips black over time, and much more when the shammy is new..

The dye on this bowlingball.com one, seems pretty colorfast. It isn't coming off on my grips or on my hand and There wasn't any blue residue on my ball.

Maybe Storm went a little heavy with the black dye or its reacting in someway with the lane oil.

I bet you are right! That black one does do some dye transfer

This is digging up an old topic, but yeah I can attest to Storm going heavy on their dye. I just washed my red Roto Grip shammy for the first time since getting it for Christmas and the water turned the same color pretty fast. Wasn't expecting that since there hadn't been any color transfer to my hands or the ball while bowling but oh well, doesn't seem to have affected it much.

I was wondering if you could wash them or if they were no good after so much oil absorption.

Yes you can clean them, here's the instructions for the storm one which would work for the others.

Shammy Pad Cleaning Instructions

The Storm Shammy Pad needs cleaning after some use The proper procedure will make the pad last longer.

Remember the Shammy Pad is made of leather

1. Wet the pad with warm water.
2. Use a soft bristle brush and gently rub the pad using a
mild dish soap to exfoliate the surface of the pad.
3. Rinse the pad with warm water to remove the soap.
4. Ring the pad out and let it air dry before putting it
back in your bag.

One thing to note: Use a "Mild soap" dish soaps can remove the natural oil from the leather and shorten the life of it.

Just my $.02... I tried the cleaning procedure on my Brunswick shammy, but after 3 months, I can't say I thought it was completely effective. Not a total zero, but just not as good. For $10, I just went a bought a new Buddies pad.

We use Dawn on our shammies and it seems to work great.
