SST 8's, The 9's or TPU X (new revision)
« on: August 31, 2015, 08:56:54 AM »
I'm returning back to bowling after about a 8 year stint away from the sport.  I bowled in the summer and walked away with a 160 average because I started the season off poorly with good game spikes but more down games.  I've tightened up my game and raised it about 25 pins and still going up.  All that said, I broke my foot in the middle of league (yes I bowled standing still.. it was great though.  My average went up.  LOL)

Now I feel the need to get  a more supporting shoe because my bone density isn't what it used to be and I don't want may more breaks. Hence my question.  I'm purchasing some shoes in the next few days and would like your opinion.  Please-I do not want to start any shoe war, just know your opinions.  You can now get them all within 30 dollars of each other so price isn't a huge issue.

Thanks!

This is a non-paid endorsement from someone who's suffered Plantar Fasciitis twice from poor support from bowling shoes (SSTs 7 & 8s) and can wear the TPUs for hours with no foot pain.

Well, you clearly didn't have one of these in your SST7/8s:

If you had, you could have avoided the pain and discomfort from two bouts of Plantar Fasciitis (PF). I just finished 14 Physical Therapy sessions to help fix my PF, which was extreme hiking triggered. Support comes from quality insoles. The limp pieces of foam rubber that masquerade as insoles in most shoes (including TPU-Xs) are not PF friendly. There is something else going on with the comfort you're finding in those shoes.

I appreciate the help but my point is that with the TPU I don't need custom insoles.  There's more to a shoe than just the insole.  Sole design, materials and shape play a huge role in shoe comfort.  As someone who's walked over a 100 rounds of golf, there's a reason why golf shoes ares so comfortable and I don't need custom insoles for those.

It's been a very simple formula for me.  I had a pair of Etonic Stabilite Plus (which BTW shared some golf technology as well which is why I had no problems).  Tried to replace them with SST7s. PF flared up within 2 weeks and only after bowling.  Switched back to the Etonics and PF goes away.  Tried the SST8s and the same.  I've had the TPUs since release and no pain whatsoever.

I'm sincerely glad you've found relief with your Plantar Fasciitis. It's one of the most painful foot ailments anyone can experience, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I guess we're going to have to look at custom insoles differently. The surface of a ball and it's contact with the lane is the most important aspect of reaction. Similarly, optimal foot positioning  in the heel cup and the arch are the most important aspects for support. SST8s have more than adequate cushioning in the outer sole construction to allow quality custom insoles to do their job. Between 25-30 games of bowling a week, and hiking 5-10 elevated miles a day, using quality insoles save my feet.

I'm glad you're able to perform many athletic activities without them.

So guys I picked up the SST 8's.  Very solid shoe.  I'm happy about 90 percent of the way through.  Even though, it seems to give a lot of support, it's not the most comfy shoe.  I just picked them up yesterday so, I think I'm going to pick some new inserts for them and go from there.  Nice, well produced shoe.

In the long run, I think you'll be happy with the SST8's. They do take some games to break in. It was about 20 games for me before the leather started softening up, and the footbeds began forming to my feet. It didn't take long before I gave no thought to shoes while on the lanes. My personal opinion is that it's the price for having the rigidity necessary in a bowling shoe.

It's always a good choice to have a decent insert in place of the limp insoles that come with most shoes. There is no substitute for having an insert designed for the shape of your foot instead of the generics that most people just live with. Your feet will thank you in the long run.

On the SST8s, avoid bending the shoe beyond the bend angle of your feet while pivoting on the lanes. The one weak spot on SST8s is the outer rubber sole, and they can crack when bent too far. Dexter did correct this flaw on the 9s, but if you're careful you should be OK.

Quick update. Picked up some Spenco ultimate support inserts and they changes the shoe to make it even better.  I am happy now. No sore back, foot, or other muscles.  I'm happy with the SST8's. It's probably not the last shoe I buy. Lol. For now, it is the favorite bowling show in the bag.

Just picked up a pair of the black/red TPU's and after a couple of sessions they are far more comfortable than the SST 8 of which I'm on my fourth pair having cracked the push sole on the previous three pairs. Dexter made good on replacements but as I've gotten older and my feet have gotten worse I've been on the lookout for an alternative offering more comfort with similar features. For me it's not even close, and though I see no reason why they wouldn't be durable, if I have to buy a new pair every year it would be worth it.

I bowled my first league night in my SST8's and they were fantastic!  No pain. No stress. I forgot all about planting my foot and had a decent night.
