Griip glove
« on: October 06, 2010, 03:37:55 PM »
A few days ago I said I would order this glove to test it out.  I ordered it that day and it showed up today - gotta love bowlingball.com!

I haven't had a chance to actually use it, but I did pull inserts out of an existing ball to see how it would feel and how it would fit.  Here are my first impressions:

It appears to be well made.  I don't see anything that stands out as being a "weak link" as far as coming apart or wearing prematurely.

It's not the most comfortable thing I've used.

First thought upon putting it on - it feels bulky.  Also looks like it may add a little bit to your span.  There is a leather "flap" that covers your palm, along with the velcro strap that secures it around your hand.

I don't find it particularly comfortable.  It's not the easiest thing to put on, but it's not difficult.  You can't really do much with your hand when you have it on.  Even picking up a drink is cumbersome.  Personally I think the flap is too large - it seems like it will interfere with my thumb.

Within the first few minutes of having it on, I came up with numerous ways I would have done it differently.  I won't list them here - I'm not in the product design/improvement business

As far as the span, I don't think I'll need to make any adjustments.  I have a relaxed span, so maybe that helps?  I imagine if you used more of a stretched span it may require adjustment.  Remember, you now basically have a strap of leather on your palm.

As far as testing it out, I'm up for suggestions.  I guess my main plan was to take 1 or 2 balls to the lanes.  I could throw the balls with inserts - I would need a few frames to get lined up - then remove the inserts and bowl with the glove. Maybe bowl 2-3 games with inserts, then 2-3 games with the glove?

I have a few pics up now, but I'll post some more pics of the glove a little bit later.

Okay, I know it has been a long time but I've finally had a chance to try the glove.  Let me preface my thoughts by telling you guys this:

I've only bowled 1 game with it. I'm at a new years eve function, and it is at a center that I haven't bowled at in over 4 years.  The center is 1 step down from cosmic bowling - multiple projection screens, semi loud music, lights are out with random spinning dance lights, and a ton of kids (including my own) running around and not observing any sort of lane courtesy.  And I'm using a ball that I haven't ever used much.  Still, its bowling and it is free for me.

So after 1 game my initial thoughts haven't changed. The thing is uncomfortable. There are a few things I would change. I do like the finger concept. I can see why grip companies would be worried. If this thing had a better implementation I would stop using inserts completely.

I hate the strap across the middle of my hand. It is bulky and annoying. My initial thought is to reduce the size by half. I have other ideas, but I'm not going to post them nor give them away for free. I have no plans to design my own product or anything, but I'll choose to keep my ideas to myself.

Lack of feel. I can't comment on increased revs or anything like that. Like I said, it is dark and I'm lucky if I can see the arrows, let alone get a read on what my ball is doing on the lane.  Still, the lack of feel is a blessing and a curse.  Throwing the ball is effortless. I don't get the impression that I'm going to drop the ball - it feels secure, if you can call it that. Really I can't feel the ball. That also hurts because you can get any sort of read on release mistakes. With inserts I could instantly tell if I put "more fingers" in the ball. With this glove I can barely tell that the ball is there or that I've released it.

That's pretty much it for now. Its good and bad. I think I may have some ideas to modify it to more of my liking. Now I just need to see if my mother or sister in law can make the changes.

I just used the glove today and threw seven games with it. I did make some modifications to it before my first game.

The first thing I did was get rid of  the strap. I use a golf glove, so I just stuck the insert fingers through the golf glove and that secured it much better then the strap.

Secondly, after throwing a couple of games to get used to it, I made another adjustment on the insert tips to get a better fit on my finger holes. Instead of resizing my finger holes, I just simply put some finger tape over the tips until I got the right fit. After doing so, my performance improved significantly. My last four games I had two 190+ and two 200+ games. That's acceptable...I carry a 188 average in the house I practiced in.

As far as the results of using the Griip glove, I definitely comes of the hand smooth and it increased the revs on my shots. I saw an increase of shots with pin carry which is not the norm for me. It's not as comfortable as I would like but it does give me a consistent feel each time I bowl no matter what ball I'm using. Corner pins were no problem as well as spare shots. It will take some getting used to but I'm a creative guy; I'll make it work somehow. Especially, if it gives me good-lasting results which at this point I believe it will.

Hope this feedback was helpful.

Best wishes and Good Bowling

I have an honest question and not trying to be funny.  But when the Vise Beast says the glove is made in poopy head's kitchen in China, who is he taking a stab at?  This glove company or somebody with the company?  Whose kitchen is he referring to?

Actually, it is funny without you trying to be so. LOL

This guy first showed up calling various people poopy head and made statements about how funny calling someone poopy head was. This was all before he started claiming he worked for Vise though.

Back in September or October when people first started posting about this glove, someone brought up an issue of the warranty. It seems the guy who makes the glove, Marshall Whitehead, did a lot of his original design work in his kitchen. Not actually making the current product mind you, but the original prototypes. So before it was posted on how these were being made, someone mentioned a problem with the warranty and how they weren't sure they wanted something made in someones kitchen. The beast idiot just morphed that into his current rant about poopy heads kitchen. I think the glove is actually made in a factory in china, pretty much like everything else we buy in this country.

That's the back story as I remember it anyway.

Whoa.  I just joined this site the other day cuz a friend told me it was worth some laughs.  And on rare occasion, a decent bowling tip. But what is funny about poopy heads?  And a product originally designed in somebody's kitchen? Sounds bogus to me, man.

The poopy head part is funny only in his mind, but he does seem to think so.

The product is legit. Like most new products, it has to start from somewhere. Hewlett Packard was started in a guys garage. Apple computer had similar beginnings. Microsoft, Dell, Yahoo, Google and FedEx were all conceived and/or started by college students in their dorm rooms.

Check out the website and look at the history tab.

I still don't get it.  Went into the link you provided (thank you) but still seems a little bogus.  In that history tab it seems like they are bragging about starting in their kitchen or garage or living room or wherever. It clearly states that this team (husband and wife??) did this in their home.  Husband was the tester and wife was the product designer?  I understand what your saying about some big companies  started by college students, but how can anyone trust anything tested by the owner. If this is really legitimate, I think this husband and wife would be better off removing some of that drivel off their history tab. Yeah, I can see where it leads to confusion with the masses. I just read that long drawn out history and I'm confused. And still don't get why someone calls it poopy heads kitchen.

Marshal Whitehead is well known and respected by many in the bowling industry, so that should not be a concern. I can't answer to the poopy head part any better than I previously did.

I guess my post wasn't "legit" enough for you?

No propaganda and no bashing.

Good idea, bad implementation.

To put it more bluntly......I really LIKE the finger part, but HATE the way the rest of the thing feels! And the part that I HATE is enough to outweigh the part that I LIKE.

Anybody out there who can make a legit post on the Griips glove?  I'm not talking the propaganda or bashing, just legit posts on experience with it, pro and con.
