Do i need a wrist guard?
« on: April 15, 2007, 10:05:56 AM »
Does a wrist guard keep your wrist straight for better hook/performance (and/or) does it keep your wrist straight so you don't injure yourself?

i noticed that my wrist was hurting me a llitle today from bowling yesterday, but that could just be because i haven't bowled in a while.

It can be used for both. Some people coming off injuries will need to use them for support but I would say more people use them to get more revs. There is one more reason, which is that the wrist to always in the same position which helps repeat shots, over and over again. Basically that is what we are striving to accomplish as bowlers, to repeat good shot after good shot.

whenever i hurt my wrist   i used the  ebonite mag force 900 i think   it's the only one made by ebonite with magnetics in it

but it also has the still plate in it   i thought it was very comfortable

Not correct. It does not build up strenght in the wrist. It's a brace. Just like a crutch. It's aides the bowler. Sometimes bowlers rely on them too much. Some bowlers can't stop using them. Have you ever seen the bowler who forgot their brace at home? They are lost without it.

Good braces are Robby's Rev's and Moro Pro Release Extended model. Both about $55. I've seen people buy them just can't get used to them. If you're tight with the pro shop guy, ask him if you can bowl a few frames with one before you buy.

i needed mine for a pinched nerve. i finally got away from it a couple of months ago (i was afraid to bowl without it). while they help they turn your muscles to jello and (for me) they ruined my revs and ultimately my ability to score. taking it off was the best thing in the world for me. now having said that i had my one and only 300 with a glove on last october. but they are limiting.

Just to put emphasis on "REVS". It might add some revolutions, but will not necessarily improve your release or the carry action of the ball. A wrist device can be very useful when you are prone to injuries and also to distribute they weight of the ball while holding or swinging it. Different designs fit different needs and styles.

Just keep in mind that a wrist device is no guarantee for more hook or better results. It is an aid for those who might need it. If you can fare without one or your problems lie in an executional area (like topping the ball), rather stay away.

For What its worth,
I used to use a wrist master because I used to collapse my wrist at my release.  It did keep my wrist from doing so when I wore, but as others said without it...uggh. I felt so weak.  I would say if you start using one, be prepared to use it for a long time. In my case it did help my release because I didn't flatten my wrist so I did get better revs and carry.

Now I also have used a Bulldog, which is a support that extends from forearm to knuckle.  I loved it, it helped my release a TON! But the thing I like from the Bulldog is that its more of a guide than support(think of a splint vs. a cast) so when I was ready to put it down, there was no weak feelings with my muscles.
