Malott's Shoes
« on: December 10, 2007, 12:46:22 AM »
I heard last night that Malott's shoes were leaving a residue on the approach.  I have these shoes and haven't experienced that.  I was wondering if this will happen soon or was it just those approaches?

Are you as big as Wes and have his style of play? I have a feeling that played into it more than just the shoes.

I'm big but not that big.  Not even close in style.

He has a custom heel on his shoe that is made out of rubber.  It is cleated so that he can stop quickly.

I know it's not the same thing, but couldn't the other players have demanded that he change them?  In the old "EZ Slide" arguments, anything that can leave a residue is illegal.  If a tiny amount of the rubber from Wes's shoe was being left on the approach and it affected other's slide, isn't that defacing the approach?

I'd say yes if they were bowling under USBC rules, but the PBA is a whole different animal.

True.  I wonder what the PBA's rule is when it comes to "foreign substances" on the approach?  I'm sure if someone used a ton of EZ Slide that was getting everywhere, he'd be asked to stop even if there wasn't an exact rule.  Does anyone know the PBA rule as it applies to defacing approaches?  We all know they deface the oil pattern by blowing up the pattern with super dull equipment during their practice time.    Maybe the next "strategy" will be to screw up where your opponent slides.

I just search the PBA rule book and the only issue regarding the approach is that they are to be maintained by the local bowling center. I also check for "foreign" and the only use of that was for substances on the ball. So there's nothing to it. Nothing about shoes either beyond how to store them. Maybe we'll see a rule change for next year?

Bump for more input.  I know it's the PBA and not your league, but every time a defacing the approaches post comes up, it's usually 4+ pages of bitter arguing.

From what I've read, Malott's shoes are PBA approved and that was the end of the issue from the tournament offical's standpoint.
