Title: Great bowling shoes for less. (do it yourself)
Post by: kidlost2000 on March 20, 2009, 10:38:43 AM
So I was on bowlingball.com looking at some great deals on Circle bowling shoes and really wanted a pair.(I'm a huge fan of Circle products) The only problem is they didn't have interchangeable heels and soles. So I figure for the price I can buy them and do it myself. Needless to say it worked great. Here are some pics. (And works great with my dexter heels and soles.)

Anybody have any Circle bowling towels or shirts out there???

The shoes

You shoulda traced out the dexter sole and heal on the shoe so you didn't waste velcro between them.  Looks cool though, let us know how the velcro holds up.

shoes were $38 shipped.
20-30 mins. total time while watching the NCAA tournamnet.

Velcro was free. Used my soles and heels collected from my different dexters.

I got two giant rolls, plus where I bowl they wax the approaches before bowling every night so sometimes you need the extra space to add an additional heel to stop.

Same velcro I used to replace on my SST5's and so far it's out lasted the manufactures.

Not a bad idea.. they did it with Golf.. seen the sandals with golf spikes..

on a side note.. it amazes me that bowling and golf shoes are just getting "athletic" and not even.. Linds are well constructed shoes and were the best of the best in bowling shoes for the longest time.. but it is hardly a shoe for any sort of athletic movement or support..
seems like tradition over rides functionality and technology...

also.. if you do do it.. just make sure the rubber doesn't come off on the approach on the push off shoe..

I got it courtesy of UPRR. The only thing I can tell you about it is on the back side it says Velcro Brand.

Which when you google it, it brings up all kinds of their products. So I would imagine it is pretty common to find and maybe available at many hardware stores.

I agree with the other guy this really makes it possible to make anything a bowling shoe if you wanted.

My only worry when I first started is I wouldn't be able to get the bottom of the shoes off safely with out damaging the shoe or needing to take it some where to have it done.

From what I could tell looking at most bowling shoes it would be easy to do. Some that are just a solid piece on the bottom front to back may be more difficult.

I used a pick tool, a flat blade screw driver and then a box knife for the velcro.

The pick tool for the thread around the sole and the screw driver for the heel. Just worked it a little at a time. They used some strong glue.

Less slide. Works well for me on any style approaches. Plus Dexter doesn't make the heel like that anymore and its a must have.

That is the cleat from around 2002 or 2003 they later went to smaller ridges and it seems to slide way to much for me.

Tried them out in league and they worked great. I ordered a second pair slightly different and did the same thing.

So now I have two great pairs of Circle interchangeable shoes.

Exactly what I was thinking about doing! I used to wear a Nike on my right foot, as I like a LOT of traction on my pushoff foot. Got the sst8s with the "grippiest" pivot foot soles available, and that works, but it'd still be cool to have my old 'bowling shoes' (air force ones) made into novelty shoes.

dexter's patents

ABS was able to get around it with the border, Linds got around it with the EXXXtra pucks and the Wedge's strip.

velcro on a sole is really patentable.. I guess so but it seems pretty obvious..and has been around a long time now..
and hasn't it been around long enough that the patent is expired??

what about etonic??

Design patents are 17 years.

As far as Etonic, I don't stay current with their lineup, do they have removable soles/heel?

Circle doesn't exist anymore because of Ebonite.

I would imagine you could get around the patent with different designs or use of velcro like what Linds and others have done.

I don't care for the fact that Dexters shoe prices have gotten higher and they give you fewer heels and soles. Then you have to pay $15-$20 to get the one you wanted that they no longer include.

Yes they are.

USBC has no rules that I could find in reference to shoes. Which is why so many people where I bowl use regular tennis shoes.( and because they use furniture polish to wax the approaches before we start bowling every week.)

USBC rule 12

The application of any foreign substance on any part of the approach that detracts from the possibility of other players having normal conditions is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to talcum powder, pumice and resin on shoes, and/or soft rubber soles or heels that rub off on the approach.

I've been looking for the velcro that Dexter uses for a while now. Never found it and the only place I ever saw it was in the Storm booth at the Nationals when they shared the booth with Dexter.

I like making my own soles.

The velcro used here is courser and thicker, and the felt part makes for a thicker, spongier sole than the original.

If anybody knows how to get the velcro Dexter/3G uses, please post the info here.  Or shoot me a message.

The velcro part on the shoes is identical to what is used by Dexter, the other I guess you would say softer part used on the actual heels or soles is thicker.

I've only had to use it to replace what is on my cleat/heel. The soles them selves ware out to fast. Not a very good deal for what they charge.

When you google 3M velcro it does bring up a lot of stuff. Have you tried emailing 3M?

As far as I know Velcro is not made by 3m.. they may use some 3m adhesives on their products but the actual product is made by the company Velcro Industries

the hard part to find is the "loop" side that dexter uses.. The standard velcro loop is longer and more "loopier", if that is a word... and what ever is stuck to it will slide back and forth as the longer loops move...

I made a custom felt sole and some others for my dexters.. The boat carpet I ended up using seemed to work pretty good.. not ideal but it worked..if you just stuck it by hand it wasn't that secure.. but after stepping on it and walking a bit you had to really pull to get it off.
