Grips / No Grips HELP!!!
« on: February 24, 2005, 07:45:30 AM »
What's the overwhelming thought on finger inserts??  Trying to make up my mind for my new Sonic Boom.  I'm leaning toward none...haven't really tried it before...but a lot of bowlers I respect highly recommend it.

Wow this is getting really popular lately! I've seen a bunch of posts about it. BASICALLY its different for every bowler. For me, when I got rid of inserts, I got a cleaner, more consistent release. Revs didnt really change, at least not that I can tell. Comfort wise, grips are a little more comfortable, but once you get used to none, and the holes fit good, its ok. It hurts at first so you have to get used to it, dont base your opinion off one game. It takes a lot of getting used to. So all in all, try it and see. Thats the only way. Plus if you start without grips, and change your mind you can just drill the holes bigger and put in ineserts.

I went from grips to a grip on ring finger and now no grips.  I find that the fitting of the ball requires more work to get it comfortable.  With grips I have the tendency to grab or hit up on the ball.  I am going to stick to now grips for now.  I seem to get a cleaner release.  However, I am drilling the bridge of the balls a little wider just in case I do want to put grips in.  Some people say it hurts not to use grips, but I don't recall having that problem.

Try it without grips.  Wait until you bowl a good amount of games and stuff, and if you decide you hate it, simply enlargen the holes and put grips in.  Easy enough.

That way, you get rid of the curiosity, and you don't have to plug/redrill anything.

FWIW,
A few different PBA players (who don't use grips), have told me that my shoulder (rotator cuff damage) is due to
using finger inserts for a lot of years. The grips keep you in the ball longer. I have used inserts since they came out....still use them, but do not rev the ball much anymore.

You might consider Vacu-grips .... I used "real" fingers until about 4 years ago, I never liked grips because I felt that it made me squeeze the ball a little.  Drilled correctly, the Vacu-grips let you jam your fingers in the ball (the advantage of no grips), but let you have the ease of making every ball feel the same (the advantage of grips).
