Ball maintenance
« on: May 22, 2005, 05:49:56 AM »
I have a GP2, polished xxcel(benchmark), savage flip(deep lines), v2 polished(toasted shot).  What type of polishes should I use to maintain these and should I use before or after the set?

To begin with, since the XXcel and the V2 (I assume the V2 Sanded) do not come polished, what polish did you use to get them this way?
That is probably the polish you should use to maintain them.

The Savage Flip is polished with Ebonite's Powerhouse Factory Finish polish. I believe that polish has no grit in it; so, you should continue with it or another no-grit polish like Black Magic or Brunswick's High Gloss polish.

The GP2 comes "ultra Smooth" which is either a 1500 grit matte finish (sandpaper) or a result of Track's Clean and Smooth, which does about a 1500 grit semi-dull finish. I say, "semi-dull" because if you press long enough and hard enough you will get a slight polsihed effect from it.

Balls do not and should not be polished after or before every set. They should be cleaned regularly; whether it's every set or every 3rd set is up to you and how dirty they get. They should be cleaned immediately after use. As for polish or re-finishing, again, it depends on the wear the ball gets. SOme wear faster and some wear slower depending on many factors. Ball reaction and appearance should govern that.

What type of cleaner should I use after each set and do they differ between balls?

Day to day cleaner, if you don't want to pay for the "Brand" cleaners, I'd suggest Simple Green / water mixture. As far as "brand" cleaners, I like Storm React a Clean. For a weekly ( use of ball dependant) Track's Clean N Dull to deep clean, remove oils is a very good deep cleaner.

You will get almost as many answers as there are people in here, just find what seems to work for you.

Personally I like Lanemasters cleaner, Brunswick's Remove-All, Ultimate's Black Magic Rejuvenator, and Neo-Tac's Liquid Nitro.

FOr home grown, I use Simple Green 50/50 with water, but as soon as I finish my current bottle, I'll try 50/50 SG and denatured alcohol.

Clean N dull for weekly cleaning
409 or Simple green mixture for daily/after bowling cleaning

For really deep cleaning there are the rejuvinator systems or the soak the ball in the hot water bucket trick.

On Edit: Forgot to agree with charlest about the polishes, after a while the polish might fade so make sure you re-polish it every so often.
