Scotch brite and wet/dry sand paper conversions

Hey everybody, i was just wondering if anybody know wut the conversion rates between wet/dry sandpaper-scotch brite pads- and abralon pads were. Thanks.

So 500 abralon is rougher than the scotch-brite pad that is 320.

This is very annoying. Unless I'm reading that chart wrong -
it says those Abralon 4000 grit is really P4000 (which I warned someone about in another post) which is ONLY 1500 grit sandpaper.
P2000 "grit" Abralon is barely 1200 grit, of regular wet/dry,
and 1000 Abralon is really approximately 600 grit.

In practice, Scotch-Brite nylon pads only go up to approx. 1000 grit, the blue pad. The hhite pad is 1200 - 1500 but if you can exert enough pressure to affect a resin ball with the white pad, you'd probably stop the motor on your spinner first. Maroon - 320 grit, green - 600 grit, light grey - 800 grit.

I have wet/dry sandpaper in 1000, 1200, 1500 and 2000 "true" grit. (as well as the normal: 320, 400, 600, 800 grit)

So i take it if u want ur ball to really get down the lane, u get 2000 grit sandpaper.

That would be my guess. I wonder if I read the chart right but these differences are beginning to get under my skin.

I heard that abralon pads are better to use though, especially for particle balls and that sandpaper rounds the particles and actually makes it worse.

Since they use EXACTLY the same abrasive, silicon carbide, as far as I know, I seriously doubt that statement is true.

As for the effect of abrasives on particle, it depends on two things,
1. the softness or hardness of the particles, and
2. the hardness of the abrasive.

Once it was learned back in the late 90s that wet/dry sandpaper, which uses silicon carbide, did sand the soft particles in Columbia and, I believe Storm particle balls, people also learned to use Scotch-Brite nylon pads to sand those balls.

On the other hand, the particles, at that time, in Brunswick balls (and Ebonite particle balls) were so hard that Brunswick had to get a new sandpaper called Trizact, which uses a harder abrasive.

Nowadays, most manufacturers say it is okay to use wet/dry sandpaper on their particle balls.

Ok, thanks. i think i might just get the 2000 and 4000 abralon pads and i'll be fine. I have the maroon, green, and grey ones.
