Black Tape
« on: February 06, 2004, 08:16:30 AM »
I know there is some difference between the manufacturers.  Donkee is thicker than Master and The Bowlers Tape for example.  I picked up a pack of Master black 1" tape from Buddies while I placed an order for some other things.  Does anyone like this stuff?  Unless I got a bad batch, the adhesive is WAY too strong.  I put some in my thumbhole (urethane slug) about a week ago.  It took me 10 minutes (literally) to remove the stuff.  Even when I got a corner lifted, it would just tear instead of lift the rest of the piece up.  After finally removing all of the tape, I put one piece back in.  I tried to remove that piece the next day.  Same problem.  Who needs tape you can't remove?  Anyone else have this problem with Masters black tape?  I bought a roll of the white and have had no problems.

I've never tried Masters. I use Ultimate. Mostly 3/4" white. I also have Ultimate black but seldom use it. When I put tape in my thumb holes, prior to putting it in, I stick it on the ball track of my bowling ball and put it on and pull it off 2-3-4 times depending how much oil is on the ball and then insert in thumb hole. Stays in thumb hole plus comes out ok too.

Strider,

I don't use th eblack tape either, but I use only the Master brand white tape in 3/4" and 1" sizes. I tried EBonite's Bowlers' tape but it just did not have a good feel for me. Some batches of Master tape are fresher than others; some glue is easier to remove than other batches. I use a small flat balded screwdriver to apply and remove tape. It usually comes right out.

Thanks all.  I usually use The Bowlers Tape (very thin) or Donkee (thicker, but not as thick as white tape) because that's what the local proshops carry.  I typically only use 1-2 white and 1-2 black in the wintertime, so I don't have much room to try the black on top of white in the back.  It is a good idea though, I'll keep it in mind.  I'm usually down to 1 white in the summer.  I never though of "oiling" the adhesive, might have to try it.  I've been using tape for years and have never had a problem removing it.  I usually use thin scissors, but I also tried a knife and a tape removal tool.  Nothing would work.  I guess I'll just take a loss and not buy Master black tape again.
