Regarding white textured thumb hole tapes...
« on: January 12, 2008, 01:30:40 PM »
I don't remember when, but sometime way back I decided I liked Master brand white textured thumb hole tape best. Trying to think back why, I kind of remember only comparing it to AMF's tape.

Recently, just to test some others, I ordered some small packs of Brunswick's and Ebonite's white textured thumb hole tape.

Surprising myself, I find them all three brands, Master, Brunswick, and Ebonite, equally good, with no discernible differences that I can tell. Makes me wonder if the original supplier to all three bowling supply companies is the same manufacturer.

Any and all comments on your experiences are welcome. I just thought I'd throw out what I have found.

The Black Ebonite tape I've tried wouldn't stick to anything. Wouldn't even stick in the thumb hole long enough to throw one ball down the lane. Other brands of black tape are as others have described here, gooy and it comes out of the thumb hole in tiny pieces. I seldom use black tape, but when I do, I first stick it 2-3 times on the outside of the ball in the track where there is a bit of oil and this tames down the stickiness of the tape. I then place it in the thumb hole and it stays in place and comes out with very little if any difficulty when needed to remove it.

Also remember that the tape's adhesive tackiness and transfer is relavent to the age of the product. It tends to transfer easier from substrate to surface the longer it sits around. I would be willing to bet one to two suppliers to the manufacturers. Possible difference in resin content in substrate and slight variations of adhesive mass. Sorry to bore you all. I dabble a bit in adhesives as my job.

I think the master tape is slightly more gritty than the others, and since i am like the only person in the world who likes texture at the back of my thumb i use that.

I went to a product called gator tape in the front because white tape slicks up quick on me and doesn't last long.
the gator tape lasts for months and you just have to clean it with alcohol once in awhile.
I adjust the fit with black tape in the back off the hole.
it has really loosened up my swing.
