Hey guys. Looking at buying a pair of sst 8 black/alloy color. My push off toe on my 6s is severely worn from the past 6 years of toe drag. It wasn't til this past January that I broke myself from that. It was part of a subconscious timing mechanism. No longer an issue. I've heard and read nothing but good things about these shoes. Just wondering if there is anything that would keep me from buying a pair. Also wondering how they will fit compared to my 6s. Any and all help is appreciated. Thx.

I went from the SST 6 to the SST 8 and the only real difference i felt was the width. I don't know if it's because mine were so old or not, but still not a big deal. After a week i didn't notice any more. Also the new soles are cheap and not leather like on my SST 6, but again, I got used to them pretty fast. Very good shoe.

Bought the original black/grey SST8's
I needed LH and wide (not a lot of options)
Heavy use now for 4 seasons, including summer leagues
no real issues except i wore out my toe as well
Will buy another pair w/o hesitation

Had the original white 8's for about a year with heavy use. They sole broke in half right behind the slide sole and I had to finish the year with a sneaker. Thats the bad, the good is I contacted Dexter and they replaced my shoes without question with the new white ones. I an skeptical of the durability, to be honest, but still love the shoes.

Thanks. I may just buy a new pair of SST6s and be done with it. They have been great shoes. Couldn't ask for better durability either. The leather still looks like new and the bottoms are still in great shape too. I just wish I had broken my toe drag habit 5 years ago. The only thing I don't like about the 6s is the way they look at the front of the shoe. They are wider at the toes than they are at the heel and when you where a 14 it makes them look like clown shoes. lol. My concern with the 8s was the durability being good with all the interchangeable parts. I will continue to research them and see if they will be a good fit for my game or if I just need to stay with the 6s. Thanks again, everyone.

I'm also considering a pair of SST 8's but I am concerned about the durability and the design. The idea of wholly interchangeable soles and heels (i.e. from left to righthanded or vice-versa) actually seems very lame to me, and I am concerned that the feel of these shoes will be compromised by this design. On the plus side, they look pretty cool, and while it may seem kinda silly I do like to have stylish shoes. ;-)
I currently have SST 6's but they feel like they might need replacing soon. To be honest, I've never really liked the Dexter heels and soles apart from ONE heel and ONE sole, and even with the heel I had to apply teflon tape to the horseshoe tips to allow for the correct braking. Nonetheless, since I am now used to this, I am reluctant to try a different brand shoe. Also, I wear a wide width, which pretty much rules out the 3G option.
Anyway, any SST 8 wearers out there who have any more feedback on these shoes? Is there anything that would make the SST 8's slide differently than the SST 6's (apart from the buckskin #8 sole vs. the microfiber #8 sole, which I already know about)?

If you drag your right toe, you can count on having problems with durability. I have had a pair of SST 8 for one and one half seasons. I ended up having to glue the sole on the right foot and now the toe area is worn through the rubber.
I have a pair of SST 7 that I wore for three seasons and never had this problem.

I have had to break myself from dragging my right toe just to save what's left of my sst 6'z. It was a timing issue for me but I knew it was fix that or I wouldn't have any shoes left.

Agree with ccrider.
If you drag your right toe, you will have problems with the interchangeable sole on the push off foot. The sole will separate from the Velcro typically around the big toe area and the sole will eventually not stick at all. Dexter is aware of this problem to the point where they have come up with a retrofit sole that attaches with a strap over the top of the toe.

I spent an hour over the course of multiple emails and phone calls with customer service trying to get a replacement for my 11 month old SST8's. But, the customer service said it was not a defect in the shoe and said in the future I should buy a shoe that does not have an interchangeable push off sole such as the SST6's.

Dexter makes a great shoe but I do not feel they have the durability that they did a few years ago.
I am in the market for replacement shoes as my 3-G Tour Ultra push sole has flat spotted on the ball of my foot after 4 years of heavy use.
Give the 3-G's a try...great feel and comfortable but no interchangeable push sole.

i had the old burgundy/black sst6s and went to the white sst8s and had the same width experience as the other guy. i love these shoes. for the amount of bowling i do, 2-3 times a week plus a couple tournaments a month they hold up great. mine are almost 2 years old and have minimal wear. i am just about to change the rubber sole on the nonslide shoe and have replaced the slide sole like twice and not changed the heels at all. as long as you dont abuse them they will last just like any other shoe.spending 20 a year for a couple soles is much better than buying new shoes every few years

I am under the impression that the 3G's are all medium width, and I need a wide width. As such, I can't consider the 3G's.

I had a problem with the push off toe as well. Went through 2 rubber soles in about 4 months. That is the only problem I ever had with them. Bought a pair of 3G's because of the push toe. Now I see Dexter has a fix for that problem, so I may go back to them when I need a new pair of shoes.

I got a pair of the sst-8 se. Fit wise they felt good but I felt there is a bit of an arch in the 8's compare to my 5's. One thing that I didn't like and why I got rid of them is that on the non slide shoe I have a toe drag on the inside of it, and the inside part of the rubber sole came apart from the bottom of the shoe. I have since went back and bought a new pair of sst-5. Personally feel that the only one to benefit from the interchangeable left and right is the shoe company cause they only have to make one shoe, but still charge you more.

I've had a pair of SST8 shoes for about a month now. I've had to replace the non-slide sole 4 times (at $18 a pop). The shoe obviously has a design defect. When I called Dexter, they referred me to the shoe manufacturer. I got a bunch of bull there and finally gave up. I've owned Dexter shoes for the past 25 years or so but that buying preference has come to an abrupt end. I'll never purchase a Dexter product again.

ive had my SST8s for 2.5 years bowling 2-4 times a week and havent replaced the traction soles and only replaced the slide sole 3 times. they are awesome shoes. just dont abuse the shoes and they wont abuse you
-
I have had the same issues with the non-sliding soles because of dragging my toes. I believe that this is a minor defect with the shoes that should be address, however I would recommend possibly buying SST6 shoes or SST5 shoes depending on the shape of your feet, I will probably purchasing SST5's has my next pair of shoes.
-
Definitely has nothing to do with abusing the shoes. I only bowl once or twice a week and take care of all of my equipment. I had a pair of sevens that have lasted more than two years and are still in good shape.
The eights do have a design defect. Dexter should step up, admit it and make things right with people that purchased them.
I will never buy another pair of Dexters because I do not patronize poor customer service.

I have had issues with one of the heels staying on (red heel, forget #). I'm on my third one. I called Dexter and also got the run around about take them back to your local shop, blah, blah, blah. The girl wasn't even pleasant about it. At this point, I will not be buying anymore Dexter shoes. I've had this pair for 1 1/2 years. The last pair I had was one of the original SST series shoes. I used them for nearly 25 years and never had an issue. They just finally wore out. It looks like Dexter has let cost cutting measures result in quality loss.
