Vise Hada Patch review
« on: May 06, 2008, 01:39:36 PM »
I recently picked up a sample pack from Buddies just to try out.  For those that don't know, it is applied to the back of the thumb to give a cleaner release.  The sample pack comes with 8 pieces each of the 4 colors.  I have only tried the blue thus far, which is the slickest of the 4.

I initially tried it with a ball that I usually throw as-is.  I had to put the death grip on the ball to keep from losing it.  I added a piece of 3/4 to the front of the thumbhole and tried again.  Still way too loose.  Added another piece of tape and dropped the ball badly.  Normally without the Hada Patch I would never have gotten out of the ball with 2 pieces of tape.  Yes I knew I always squeezed the ball.  But even when I concentrated on NOT squeezing, I would still hang up.  Not so with the patch.

The ball in question eventually got 6 pieces of tape in the thumb before I felt comfortable using it.  This made the thumb extremely snug but getting out of it clean is no longer a problem.  This has allowed me to loosen up my armswing tremendously and given me a very quick, clean release into the lane instead of on the upswing.  I have only used it for a week but I can't see bowling without it.  I absolutely love the way the ball comes off my hand.  My ball speed and rev rate have both increased visibly from such a small change.  The best part is that it was an easy fix and throwing the ball without squeezing came very easily.

I would absolutely recommend giving it a try.  It's a great product.

Raven, I too bought a sample pack from Buddies about a week ago but haven't tried it yet. The blue as you say it the slickest (Quickest) and teh Grey is the slowest.  I am currently using custom made thumb inserts copied from my favorite thumb hole, but am going to try a Contour Tapered Thumb sleeve which one of my drillers is going to put in a plugged ball for me to try. Then I will try the tape after I get settled.

Bill from Buddies sent me the following prior to my ordering it. Let us know how the other colors work. I will try mine, but waiting until I get settled on my thumb inserts.

Just released from Vise Grip, new ... "individually cut pieces"... of Vise Grip Hada Patch. The tape comes 40 pieces to a package. The Aqua Hada patch is smoother material, than the Gray Hada Patch. The Aqua Hada Patch tape gives you a faster release, than the Gray Hada Patch but slower release then the Red Hada Patch.

·  1 - Quickest ....Blue

·  2 - slightly slower....Red

·  3 - even slower....Aqua

·  4 - slowest release ....Grey

Same thickness as the original hada patch rolls. #4 is slightly thinner then the tan patch

I use this tape every time, and usually w/red or blue on the back of my thumb, and grey on the front.  Great stuff.

I was skeptical at first, but after using them,I won't be without them! I believe you have them reversed, though. The blue(#1) is the slowest release and the charcoal(#4) is the quickest. This is because the lower the number, the thicker and rougher the Hada patch. The blue is very thick and rough. The charcoal is thin and smooth.

Strictly use blue and love it so much I've 5 NIW (New In Wrapper) packs of 40!!!  Funny thing about it, I use white tape (in the front) to make my thumb snug with the hada patch on the back of the thumb.  Tight fit with smooth quick release of the thumb.  Only thing, after bowling the patch feels like it's taking skin upon removal ... LOL

I use the Red Hada patch, but was using it just for skin protection purposes. I have a small patch of skin on the back of my thumb where it rubs slightly, never seemed to be anything I can do about it so I just use a tiny piece of tape there.

After bowling 7 days straight and in the middle of a particularly intense practice session yesterday, I started to get some chaffing on my thumb so I put a bigger piece of the tape on widthwise (I usually cut it down to half its width). I was amazed. The first shot felt like I had dropped the ball because I did not feel it. The ball went 3 feet further up the lane and ignored the drying midlane, slapping the 6 off the wall into the 10. I found I could move further right or move left and slow my speed a lot with the ball gliding down the lane.

The product was amazing for getting the ball off my thumb cleaner. Generally I've got a lot of grip pressure and after I'm done with the tournament I have this week, I'm going to tape up some balls and try to incorporate bigger pieces of Red Hada into my game.

If your looking for a quick fix to get it off with less grab, this will do the trick I feel. I will get hold of some blue samples to test along with the aqua for comparison purposes when I start to experiment with the product more.

How does Hada Patch compare to the Ebonite Skin Protection Tape?  Where would that fall compared to #1 - #4?  I have used Perfect Patch, and most recently I have been trying Ebonite's thumb protection tape.

Perfect patch is only 3/4" wide, but it seems to promote a cleaner thumb release than the thumb protection tape.  The thumb protection tape is 1" wide, though, which is nice.

Are there any thumb tape products which have a shinier, more slippery, and/or smoother surface?  Even Hada Patch seems to have a cloth feel/look to it.  Has anyone ever tried the Bio Skin tape on their thumb?  I would be interested to hear thoughts on this topic.

Thanks
Chuck

I have some of this stuff. It's smooth as silk.

I LOVE my Vise Hada Patch.  I generally use blue, but have used red and even aqua depending on the weather and how much swelling my thumb has.  It fills up some of the space in the thumbhole while still giving me a comfortable, consistent feel.  The only time I've bowled without it in the past year is one day when my thumb was badly swollen and it was unusually warm in the bowling center.

I really struggled to get Bio Skin to stay on my thumb when I played... But I do use white tape in the back of my thumbhole and have a tendency to sweat a lot.

Well I love the stuff so much that I ordered some more.  After reading Graaille's post I decided to try the Grey on the front of my thumb along with the Blue on the back.  This improved my release even more.  I found that with just the Blue and all the white 3/4 that I used in the front of my thumbhole that I had to use easy slide to slicken the white tape up.  With the Grey patch on the front of my thumb I no longer have to bother.  One downside to this is that I've had to add so much tape to my thumbhole now that I'm strongly considering getting all my stuff re-slugged to a smaller size.  I believe I have 10 pieces in 1 ball...it makes the hole a funny shape and feels odd.

For those asking about the Bio Skin:  A couple years back I bought a roll of Bio Skin Ultra.  It's the stuff that's a baby blue color.  The product was ok, but I had a terrible time getting it to stay in place.  After a few shots it would start to roll up around my fingers.  I even tried some Benzoin Tincture to make it adhere better with mixed results.  That Tincture is super sticky but didn't work that well with the Bio Skin.  It's possible that I was applying the tape in the wrong manner, but I gave up.  The roll is still in my basement.

I have all four colors. I mainly use them for protection and to fill thumb space in my slug too.
