I'm embarrassed.
There was a setting that was set wrong in this wonderful new software you guys bought for me... I've fixed it now - luckily, for the first week of the new round.
The setting was - if you were bowling a vacancy or absentee score, you had to beat your average to get the point. If the vacancy/absentee bowler "won" the point, it went to the team that won the game. I know this is normal for "normal" leagues, but we all know this one isn't normal in any sense of the word.
I don't think it made a huge difference, so I'm not going to change it for the first round - but it's fixed now.
