The tournament was well done and worth attending. Payouts were kind of low, but it was a small field. I liked the 5 game format much better than the normal 3 that so many places use now. When we got there, we were told it was a 42' sport pattern. Many moaned because they didn't bring an oiler. But, as many forget, sport shots are not all heavy oil. This one was very medium. The shot played in, but you had plenty of equipment choices depending on your game. There wasn't a true out of bounds on the outside, but if you leaked it there, it wasn't hitting the head pin. You could play down and in, but it was very touchy.
I started down and in with my Tour Power, but gave up after about 5 frames, because my weaker release wasn't consistent enough. I moved left of center with my WMB and targeted 14 to 12 depending on the pair. I didn't need something super strong, but it's by far my smoothest piece. The back ends started off crisp, so you didn't want anything that read the dry too hard. The last game I couldn't get the WMB through the heads or had no recovery, so I moved a little left with my Tour Power. I was 2nd after 3, but dropped to 12th after the worst game I've thrown in literally 5-10 years. I managed to average 207.5 for the other 4, but that one left me minus overall and 40 out of the cash. Four unmake-able splits that looked really good up to the break point and some bad spare making left me shaking my head. I did manage a 205 the last game and the leader (same pair) only had a 150, but I was only able to climb to 10th.
All in all I had a good time and thought it was a good event. Now, if I can just learn to make a spare...
