Proposal for Summer Tournament League
« on: April 26, 2005, 09:23:43 AM »
This is a proposal for a scratch, singles, summer "sport" tournament/league.  This would be for scratch bowlers participating in official or un-official "sport" leagues, nationals-pattern leagues, PBA leagues, or "challenge" leagues.  As with all BR tournaments, we would not only rely on each participant's honesty in posting scores, but honesty in that they're are bowling in a league that features some sort of challenging lane conditions.  This would not be a tournament for boosting one's ego.  If all participants are truly bowling in the type of league posted, we should see some low scores.

Format: 3-games per week (Sunday through Saturday) for 10 weeks starting mid-May or early June.  Each bowler would post scores from 1 specific sport/pba/nationals/challenge league.  Bowlers earn points as follows: 5 points for each week of participation (non-blind), 1 point for each bowler beaten per game, 1 point for each bowler beaten per 3-game series, 3 bonus points for 1st place any single game,  5 bonus points for 1st place any 3-game series.  No points earned for taking a blind and blinds do not count as a bowler "beaten".

My goal is to get bowlers to take on some tougher conditions over the summer and give those BR members who are taking on the challenge of tougher conditions a place to "congregate" and share their stories as well as some friendly competition. If formed, I propose calling the tournament the "HNTHS (Hooray, no typical house shot) Singles"

Questions and feedback are welcome.  Let me know what you think.  If you'd like to join/see this happen, please post the beginning and ending date of the league you would be using.

I'm for it.  I have my team for the summer season in my Sport league.  Surprise, surprise, they want me to come.

I will probably make everyone feel good about their scores.  My average over this past winter was a 159 with a high game of 216 and high series of 743 for 4 games.

On edit:  We start June 6th and probably end just before Labor Day.  If this starts sooner, we have a few weeks still left of the winter season.

Would you object to making it an over average setup to keep it more competitive?
For users that do not have a sport league average they could use the THS to Sport conversion chart for the first 9 games until they have established an average.
You could still use the bonus points other than they would be based on pins over average instead of pin fall.
I think that there would be more interest if using this format, myself included since my sport average is only 182 and I would not be able to compete with some of the better bowlers on here. I am up 12 from last years aport average though.

I would love to bowl in this.
I am bowling in a sanctioned sport league on tuesday night starting May 3rd.
Two summers ago when i bowled in it i finished with a 202 average.
Last year i did not bowl in it do to an ankle injury.
The league is called Tuesday Sport Doubles.

This sounds like a good idea - count me in!

I'll be bowling in a PBA pattern league at Hawthorn Lanes in Vernon Hills, IL.  We are supposed to bowl on each of the five basic PBA patterns during the course of the league, with the pattern changing every two to three weeks.

We bowl on Wednesdays, starting on May 18 and going into August, probably either Aug. 10 or 17.

Well, we could run two divisions, one for scratch and one for over average if that would bring more bowlers.  Would that suffice?

That makes seven (7) of us.  If we can get to 10, I think it will work, though we may need to change the bonus points.

Where are all the people that complain about bowling's lack of integrity?

Volksbeetle - I averaged 177 in the PBA league last summer.  Oh yeah, "humbled" is a good word to describe it.  However, it did prepare me for my first PBA event which was successful

Explain how it would work if not bowling on a sport shot. Thanks

You'd need to be participating in a non-official sport league (there are leagues out there who can get the house to put down the tough shot, but not pull tape), a PBA-Condition league, an ABC-nationals pattern league, or something similar.

Regardless, you should be involved in some sort of league that is dedicated to putting down tougher lane conditions.  Most of the time you can tell because the name of the league or the league advertisement will specifically state the lane condition(s) you'll be using.  If it doesn't, the league is likely a normal league participating on the house shot.

While I don't automatically condemn bowlers participating in a normal league, using scores from a house shot against bowlers out there working their butts off to score on some sort of sport, pba, nationals, flat, etc pattern isn't fair.  One could also make the argument that pitting bowlers on PBA patterns versus bowlers on completely flat patterns is also not completely fair and I wouldn't argue with you.  As stated in the original post, the goal is to bring bowlers together who are out there demanding more of themselves.
