Need advice on a ball to get
« on: February 12, 2007, 08:02:27 AM »
Hello, I am just getting into bowling and I wanted to learn to throw a hook.  Whenever I would go bowling, I would usually use a 14 or 15 pound house ball and bowl using a 2 finger grip.  My brother recently got a ball and seeing him with a ball has made me want to get one and learn how to throw a hook using a 3 finger grip.  I am looking for some advice on what ball to get.  I am a pretty big guy, I am 6'1" and 260 lbs.  I don't know what kind of bowler I am.  I think I am what is called a cranker, but I am not sure.  Any suggestions on ball choice?

Also I wanted to know if the type of bowler I am would affect what ball i should get? if so, could you guys give any suggestions on the type of ball a stroker, a tweener, and a cranker should get?

There are a lot of things that come to play here, oil conditions you see mostly, your style ( cranker, tweener etc) and if you are a "no thumber", your style will change from what you do now.

I, we, can suggest many balls that might work for you but your best bet would be go to your local pro shop and have them watch you and make suggestions.

That said, several good balls for medium/medium heavy oil are:

Spit Fire
Fired Up
Pain
OverTime
Black Widow
No Mercy
Angular One

Not saying you should buy one of them, just something for you to do some research on and maybe ask your pro shop guys if any of them are the ones they might suggest. Just a place for you to start.

Hope this helps.

As a beginner, get an entry level reactive resin ball.  Brunswick Power Groove, Ebonite Tornado, RotoGrip Tropical, etc.  Learn to roll the ball properly before moving up to the next level ball.  --  JohnP
