Back to bowling after a long layoff. Need ball advice.
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:06:16 PM »
So it has been nearly 20 years since I bowled last. Life just
got in the way. My last ball was a Columbia Blue Knight.
I have been out the last few weeks bowling and have
fallen back in love with the game. Using house balls suck.

Okay so a little about my game. Speed is 16 miles an hour, straight up the
back with little revs. This will never change unfortunately.I will be going
back to a fingertip grip. The league i'm joining at first is a fun league using
standard house pattern. Freshly done before league starts. In the 20
practice games i have shot recently my average has been 145 with house balls
shooting from the outside.

I really want a ball that will hook for me in these conditions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I would like to stay in the Storm Roto Grip family as that is what the pro shop here mainly carries.

First, welcome back to the game.

The good news is that there are easily balls that will work for you in both Storm and Roto Grip's line.  Storm's Hy-Road is one of those tried and true benchmark balls that is a house shot killer.  It features the time tested R2S Hybrid cover and fits a variety of styles from stroker all the way to cranker.  It works on virtually all medium and some medium-heavy patterns.

The Hy-Road has been on the market for 4 years now and that alone is unheard of in the bowling world.  That ball is just that good.  Every time Storm has tried to discontinue the ball, their newer balls in the same price point just have not exactly compared.  It has a spot in my bag because it will easily tell me whether the ball for the pattern is too much, not enough, or just right.  I've also been able to use it on multiple types of patterns, including some sport shots and it is versatile.

Roto Grip has the Berserk, but I have not seen it used locally or know anyone using that as of yet.  It is also a hybrid, though it comes at 4000 grit compared to 1500 polished on the Hy-Road.  Both balls can easily have the surface changed to meet your needs and will be similar.  However, I would not be able to go into detail about that specific ball to do a true comparison.

For the money, I'd say go with the time tested Hy-Road.  It's a favorite among those who throw Storm for a reason.  It just flat out works.

With your proshop mainly carrying those products have you talked with them? They know the lanes and conditions you will be bowling on and can easily get you set up. It will likely be one of the higher performance balls if your wanting hook, but it could easily be one from the tier just below the HP line.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

+1   I agree with this and will add something to it.  Since your last ball was a Blue Knight, everything on the market is going to give you mroe hook than what you had.  Since it has been so long, you dont really have any business going to a higher end ball for 2 reasons.  1. Those balls may want to hook too much and you wont know what to do with it; call it culture shock.  2.  Anything that has a strong core, if you are up the back of the ball as much as you say, the ball will want to roll extremely early and hit like a turd.  Have your pro shop guy take you out on the lanes and get an idea for your bowling style first.

Please let us know how it goes.  Then we can narrow down some choices for you.  Remember that your rev rate is not going to be very much throwing a conventional house ball.  So alot of things can and will change once you get into a fingertip ball.  Just stay open minded as the game is wayyyy different than you remember it.

Personally, I would go with something low end (Heck, even plug and redrill the Blue Knight, which is still urethane) and go from there. First time fingertip + mid-high end ball may make you develop some bad habits without coaching.

Again Thanks for all the input. After spending an hour with the pro.
Shooting with three balls he had that fit fairly close. A little change to
my release. We decided on a ball. After fitting and drilling
a new Frantic. Back to the lanes we went. All I can say is Wow.
This ball fits better than anything I had ever had before. Pin
carry incredible.
Today I went down to the lanes and threw six games with my new tweener
style, Very easy to do after working with the pro. Also did not throw
my spare ball as I just wanted to see what I could do with the new
ball and release. Lowest game 163 highest 187. Two different lanes one freshly
oiled and one very broken down lane. Cant wait till Sunday night and my first league
game in a very long time. I'm hooked again.

Frantic is a very good ball, and should serve you well. Welcome back to bowling and here's to having those high scores coming again in no time.
