Title: Back up bowler

My wife throws a back up ball and has for years her average is only in the 130's at one time I had her throwing a breaking ball but the next year she was back to a back up bowler and I have not been able to get her out of it since.  My question is what type of ball would be a good for her she uses a 12 lb ball.  She has never had anything except a plastic ball.  I want to get her a reactive and see if she can get any better action, she leaves all kinds of single pins that she is not too good at picking up If I could get her one or two strikes a game it would be an improvement.

Hmmm, for a ball, I'd suggest a mild reactive ball like the Brunswick Power Grooves, but other manufacturers have also good antry balls with reactive coverstock and high RG cores.

Back up balls are common among women... I suppose it is the broader waist? And I have read somewhere that it was because women would naturally tend to put their hands next to their legs when they sit, while men do different things... dunno.

In fact, a friend of mine who started bowling with a conventional grip and even with a fingertip reactive (also 12 lbs., an Eraser Boost with a rather aggressive drilling) used to produce a back up ball and a reverse hook.
Then she got a wrist support/glove for her forearm from her friend which covers her index finger and pinky (a blue one, I do not remember the manufacturer and model at the moment), and it became immediately better. She is a low track bowler, with low speed, and now she averages 140-150. Although she still tends to have a reverse hook with her spare ball every now and then...

So, I'd suggest asking a pro-shop proprietor and/or a trainer for advice - either for a new ball and a matching drilling, and maybe for solutions concerning the release. I'd guess that a stiff wrist support will be a step forward.

There are two ladies in one league I am in. Both are back up bowlers. One lady uses a Hit, 13# (purple, that seems to be a fav among ladies) and the other has a Super Trooper (also purple, go figure). I would also think the Ebonite Ice would be a good ball for either of them, but they didn't care for the color. Both avg around 145-155, have good luck with the balls, once they found the right mark. The biggest problem I can see with both of them is spares.

Keeping in mind the line for the 10, 7, whatever , seems to be a problem for them. I have suggested the 'closed fingers' grip for them and to a point, it helped. The aim is where they seem to have the problem, not so much control, as each has in their mind a line that seems to work for them.

Anyway, just letting you know the types of balls they use and it works for them.

Yeah, about colours... in my bowling club house, there are 10 lanes, 160 balls. But only ONE pink old spare ball - always in use, always by the girls. That's how you get'em!
