death grip
« on: May 10, 2009, 05:05:40 AM »
newbie, still having lots of  fun, noticed something today, when i throw the ball, if i don't keep my thumb nail pressed against the back of the hole, i death grip the ball, shank it/ throw with the shoulder you name it, but if i keep the thumb nail pressed back, i get a nice sweet swing and lots of rotation and a consistant shot, what causes this? is my thumb pitch off? any tips or suggestions greatly appreciated thanxs

Sounds like SOMETHING is off, but without being able to see it firsthand, I don't think I could render an answer.

If your a newbie, it is well worth the time to consult with a KNOWLEDGABLE ball drilling professional about your span, your pitches, and your choice of equipment.

I stress the word knowledgable because there are many hacks out there who will claim to be good, but are not.  The best way to find out who is and who isn't is to ask for advice here, and ask the higher average bowlers around your area who does all their ball work for them.

I know you want to keep your nail against the back of the hole but in all honesty a good grip is slight or soft pressure on the pad of your thumb. A very good ball driller taught me a trick one time to get used to this type of grip. He had me tape (if righthanded, reverse if a lefty) the side of the ball where the left side of your thumb lays. Tape it tight enough to so you aren't grabbing the ball but loose enough it will come off. Give that a try it may help you like it did me.

thanxs for the tips guys, did some searching/research and found a pro shop, with a highly regarded driller/owner, took my new 1 month old storm rapid fire pearl to him, to have a second opinion on the span/ pitch etc, he watched me bowl,  then checked my span/pitch. but then i got lost with all the numbers( 1/4 inch pitch etc etc,) he said lol, but it ends up that my span is almost 3/4 of an inch to big, so now he is going to plug the thumb and redrill it properly, lesson learned like juggernaut said not everyone in a pro shop knows there stuff like you would think they do,thanxs again for the advice,

Etch,

Having been around bowling and drilling balls for a few years, the grip being long was my first impression, but without seeing it myself I didn't want to jump to any conclusions.

Sadly, you are correct in saying that not everyone who drills equipment is equal in talent, or knowledge. A good, reputable, knowledgeable driller can save you lots of pain/trouble in the short term, and money in the long run.

Your ball will feel quite different when it is re-drilled, so have patience until you get used to the "new" feel. If it was too long, the new grip should help your accuracy by letting you concentrate more on that than hanging onto the ball.

 GOOD LUCK!

thanxs jugger, makes me now realize why sometimes i would just have the ball dump on me so to speak, fall right off my hand onto the lane, thought it was a weak wrist, and went and bought a robby revs 3 off of ebay, needless to say it hasnt helped, lol, used it for 3 games, but with the span being wrong,so now will try with out the brace and the new span, and will try that way for a long time before going to the brace, is there a way? / how to? post pics and or videos on here, thanxs again
