Ball Speed vs Hook
« on: January 08, 2017, 06:07:05 PM »
Faster Ball and less hook vs Slower ball and more hook??!

The long and short of it is I want my ball to hook more. Currently throwing on a house shot in leagues, with a Columbia Nitrous, ball speed is averaging about 18mph (calculated via the in-alley computer and on video from the coach's eye app and ball speed chart). I don't know what my rev rate is though, haven't figured out how to calculate that, yet. However my ball is only hooking a couple of boards. I line up on the second dot from the right, aiming at the second arrow (Almost exactly as this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ejrjf8hjkE) video at 5:49). Doing the math that seems to be a 10 board hook, however I would like more, but not a big sweeping hook.

I guess there are a couple different options...
Option #1 Continue with what I'm doing, 10 boards is fine
Option #2 Slow the ball down and allow for more hook
Option #3 Change the surface of the ball and do...
Option #4 Do something I haven't thought of yet

Thanks and I look forward to hearing the responses.

For one thing the Nitrous is not that strong of ball.Get a strong asymmetric ball. Then if that is not enough hook then try slower speed.

From the info you gave us, I'd venture to say you're playing left of the friction, which you need. Try moving your feet and eyes 4 right and target 5 or 6 and see what happens. Surface change would be the fastest thing to change, ballwise.

I'll try and get out this week and get a video or two to post.  Right now, I just purchased my first ball and am getting into bowling.  Getting another ball is possibly well probably  down the road, but not right now.

Looking at the house pattern I could see where I'm right of the friction and in the oil.  I'll try to move more right and see what that does. Any other suggestions or things to look at?

What type of friction chance, what pads? I think the original finish is 500/2000.

Ideally, you want to have relatively matched speed and revs. Low speed with high revs will hook a ton. High speed with low revs will not hook much at all. So low speed/low revs, medium speed/medium revs, high speed/high revs. If you don't have matched speed/revs, you are still not out of luck though. High speed with low revs is a tough combo to deal with, however.

As others have said, the friction is to the right. It might be that you need to start that ball further right on the lane. Instead of aiming at the 2nd arrow, try the 1st arrow. Adjust your feet if necessary.

don't worry about how much you are hooking it as long as you are scoring good.  Another option since you are just starting is getting some coaching lessons or practicing and working on your release.  Once you get release good, you most likely will be hooking it more.

If you have to choose between the two, always go with more speed. Energy to the pocket will usually out score finesse.

Well after bowling 2 weeks in the league. I realizing I still want some more hook, only getting about 5-6 boards.  Even after I've shifted.  I've been told by a guy in the league that I bowl fast but with medium spin. But because of it being a weak ball and my speed it can't finish its roll.  So I need to do something.  I'm thinking the next step would be changing the surface. What pads would I look at? 1000? 500? Also any good coaches in the Cincinnati area?
Thanks

Jim Merrill is one of the best.  You can probably call any bowling center in the area and get his phone number, or go to the Certified Coaching forum at bowlingchat.net and ask him to contact you, link is below.  --  JohnP

I prefer more speed but from the info given I suggest trying first arrow or 5 board and standing more right . its just a quick tip if you want to see your ball hook more.
