for a beginner I would just go with a brunswick power groove or the tornado line by ebonite.  Graduate from that then go to the bvp line by brunswick.

Check out the Roto Grip entry line they have some really good stuff at great prices and these entry level balls are balls that you will be able to continue to use not only when you are learning but after you get better as well, a lot of these other balls do not hook that much and basically after you learn how to throw a hook you won't be able to use them for anything other than very light oil or dry lanes

My wife has a Tornado that we started her with.  It works great. Probably move her to a BVP Renegade in the future

There had been a Renegade in 2002, and there's a new BVP ball in the pipeline. But no confirmation about its name nor material yet. Boo!

BVP stands for Brunswick Value Product.  It is Brunswick's mid-level ball line.  --  JohnP

the renegade is not a bvp ball and would not be a step up seeing as it is polyester

ebonite black ice is a hell of a ball for the price.
works well on most medium type conditions and won't get you into too much trouble.
just nice and even, consistent, smooth and lots of strikes.
