Title: Blisters
Post by: HouseBowler64 on July 17, 2008, 10:09:09 PM
Alright I have had blister problems all my life...I believe my pitch is a quarter under! My proshop guy has tried different things but can't seem to get anything right! I have recently started bowling "real" tournaments! I average around 225 in league! I just get irritated when I get done with my 3rd game and I'm almost blistering! Example this past weekend I had a tournament with 5 game qualifying! I am 113 over after 4 games but the 5th game I blow open a blister and shoot 185 to take me down to 98 over! The cut was 111 over! So yeah I'm mad! But neways suggestions would be appreciative! I will advise that I use rosin, and I squeeze the ball and yes I know we aren't supposed to squeeze the ball so everyone has a flaw in their game

if you know the spot... why not protect it with some "sure release skin patch" or similar... protects the skin and makes the release easier

Where is the blister located (photo would be great)?  If you're "knuckling" your thumb, try a thumb straight - link to one online site to order is below.  --  JohnP

New Skin won't do it. You have to use one of these tapes so you can always have a clean release and never and I say never have a blister in your life again. At the same time you can promote a snug thumb release and avoid the grip of death. The advantage is that you can have layers of tape on your thumb instead of inside the thumb hole for quicker adjustments. It is worth the investment in protecting your thumb. I pre-cut cut them and have them ready in a small plastic container.

What is your span? Unless it's quite short 1/4" forward may be a bit much, which could cause the thumb to not exit cleanly. If a spot rubs long enough you will get a blister.

Buy the superglue that comes with a brush applicator.  Paint a thin coat on the area that usually blisters, then dust it with easy slide before it dries.  Make sure you don't let it touch anything until the glue dries completely.  Don't worry, the oil your skin produces will make the glue release in about five hours and it'll just peel off.  Works like a charm for me when I'm having problems with blisters.

I even used this technique once when I smashed the heck out of my finger taking my ball out of a locker.  I just pushed the flap of skin back in place and glued it down then bowled the tournament.  Burned like heck when I first applied the glue, but I didn't feel anything after a few minutes.

Blister is located on the left side of my thumb, and every once in awhile I'll get one on the top of my thumb right below the nail kind of the right! My span is 4 5/8! Thanks for all replies! I will take each reply into consideration and work on span and also get some tape! By the way thanks borincano for the links!

Your span at 4 5/8" would probably dictate different pitch, in my opinion. My span is pretty close to that and my thumb pitch is at zero both directions. Some would even try about 1/8" reverse.

Fitting hands is rather subjective, so you may need to experiment a little, but there's no way I would have your pitch at 1/4" forward until I tried going the other direction a little.

Pitch is different for each person.  I have the same span and have 5/8" forward pitch.  Many years ago I had reverse and struggled with dropping the ball.  With the help of Eddie Williams and Ron Clifton I moved to more and more forward.

According to Susie Minshew, the more relaxed your grip, the more forward pitch you need.

Good point. Don't forget that women usually have more flexibility in their thumb joint. His pitch is at 1/4" forward and it obviously isn't working for him, thus the blisters.

HouseBowler64,

Thumb tape, new skin, mole skin are all products that cover the wound (blister in this case). Why not just fix the reason why you're getting the blister in the first place?

Blisters are caused by too much friction between your skin and whatever it's rubbing against. Assuming you're not "knuckling" the thumb in the hole, then you need a better fit. Good luck.

I too have the same problem. My blister is on the very left side of my thumb (i'm right handed) right were it bends. What I usually do is use vise tape over my thumb but lately I have been bowling more and the blister is back. So now I put new skin on the blister then put the vise tape over the new skin and it works great for me.

If at first you don't succeed use a bigger ball.

Sorry, I misunderstood when you said "squeeze" the ball, and I didn't translate that into bending the knuckle in the thumb hole. Good luck with finding something that works.

Yeah I guess that's how we say it around here, squeezing the ball, knuckling the ball, not throwing the ball right! It all is the same
