somewhat of a new bowler, but need help still please
« on: November 29, 2005, 09:36:57 AM »
let me start off by saying that i am somewhat of a new bowler
i have been going at it seriously since january, and have progressed very far since then. my average is somewhere between 160 and 170ish. i throw it at a medium speed. i couldnt tell you exactly how fast my throw is, but it is not too slow and it is not as fast as the guys who rip it down the lane. i stand at the 35 and shoot at the 15. i have a plain urethane ball with no core drilled to curve. i am looking for a new ball, as i am tired of a plain urethane ball that i bought off my friend for 25 bucks.

i have considered and am choosing from three balls that i have looked at (though i am not limiting myself to these three choices if a better suggestion is given)

they are:
ebonite overtime
hammer doom
brunswick vapor zone

i believe that the overtime is for somewhere around medium oil as well as the doom. i dont however know the conditions for the vapor zone, but i heard good things about it. if anyone could tell me which ball would be best for me, please do. if anyone needs more information, please ask.

also, how should i drill the ball? what would be some good shoes to get? what would be a good case to get? should i get more than one ball? i have no idea as to the answers of my questions at all. i hope to be getting something bowling related for christmas, so any help would be appreciated. thx

Go to the pro shop operator in the alley(s) where you bowl and have them watch you bowl. Let him know of your problems. He or she should be able to let you know what ball might be of hepl to your game.
I'd like to respectfully let you know that one thing that you should do is get a good practice routine going. Again, the pro shop operator should be able to give you some practice tips. Spares are the bigest thing that I see younger bowlers miss. Concentrate on those first as they are they mainstay of scoring.
The strikes will come with practice and the development of a consistent delivery.

If you don't want to go to the pro shop, watch, ask someone in a league that you see all the time. Ask more than one , that will give you some options.

Keep in mind I do not know how you stand, throw, your style, but you might want to think of two balls. One on your list and keeping your other for a spare ball. You seem comfortable with it, but if you feel you must have a new ball, look at a White Dot for spares, tough to beat them for that.

As Chris said, your best shot would be the Pro shop, and I agree, I just gave you an option of asking someone who you see a lot and watch them bowl, the more you ask, the more options you will have.

Good Luck !! and practice...practice...etc

I'll probably reveal that I am an amature by saying this, but I have kept my Ebonite Gyro urethane ball as my spare ball. Oddly enough it has more hook than my Ti Messenger, but at least it is very consistent and controllable. Keep in mind that some people get so caught up in all of the small details of the game that starts to be more work than fun, if that makes any sense. I agree, that learning to pick up spares with a spare ball is imperative to a high score, but sometimes I find more challenge in trying to pick up the spare by rolling the ball between the legs or left handed. As for a good second ball. I'd highly recommend the TPC Shooter or Ebonite Obsession. I own the Obsession, and being a stroker (slower ball speeds), I find it's smooth rolling arc to be just right on light to medium to oily lane conditions. Please take what I say with a grain of salt, as I am more of a recreational bowler than a league bowler. I agree with nd300 and azguy, and I'm sure that they're probably far more experienced bowlers than myself. I just felt like putting in my two cents.
