Newbie...couple of ?'s
« on: March 12, 2005, 09:35:42 AM »
Hey all, just purchased my first ball: a Brunswick Tiger-Print Viz-a-Ball. I know, I know. But I'm just a beginner and didn't want to spend too much.... yet. Does anyone know if this is a pretty decent ball for a beginner? Also, I'm freaking out about the drilling process. I purchased the extended warranty which protects against cracking while drilling. Does this happen a lot? My local bowling alley makes me nervous... I don't really know if they're competent enough to do a good job. But, they DO drill balls and it's close. Or, I could travel about 50 miles and have it done with peace of mind at a better alley. Should I just go with my local dufus alley or travel a farther for the pros? Help!

Yes, that ball will be fine for you since you are just starting out.  As for cracking, no, it doesn't really happen that often.  But it's better to be safe than sorry, right?  About your local alley......Is there any reason you are scared to go to them?  Do they have a bad reputation?  What I would do if I were you, is ask the bowlers in the leagues where is the best place to have your ball drilled up.  Of course you'll probably find a couple mean people but you're sure to get some good suggestions.

Good luck and welcome to bowling!

Thanks, I feel a little better now. My local alley just couldn't really answer my questions because the drilling guy was not there. It's pretty much run by high schoolers who don't know much about bowling. Thanks again!

Its a good beginner ball for you.  When you get better and switch to a differnt ball you will then have a good spare ball.

If you are looking for a good first fingertip ball, the Power Grooves from Brunswick offer a good value for the money. For oily lanes, the Black Sparkle with particles is quite strong, and the shiny PK17 pearl balls are a very good choice for dryer lanes with a clean backend. You can keep your polyester/viz-a-ball as a spare ball.

Nevertheless, check out your local pro shop or have a trainer make suggestions for ball depending on your style, speed and local lane condition.
