Getting more spin
« on: May 29, 2005, 07:48:45 AM »
Well I can't figure out how to get the ball to spin more? I right now start the ball on the outside arrow (right handed) and let the ball break back in to the pocket. Ant tips or should I just do what works and not worry about alot of spin?

Without seeing you bowl, you may be in the same ship I was for awhile. I'd just throw it straight and let it break to the pocket, but thats all I could do. I found that the problem wasn't that I didn't have enough revs, but rather that I wasn't getting any side rotation on the ball, so all my revs were just from lift, so the ball couldn't really turn an angle at all.

It would be really handy if you could post some videeo footage of your delivery, that way we could make a judgement on how you are throwing the ball, and give tips on where to improve.

some general tips though...

try to keep your wrist cocked and strong through the delivery, and your hand behind the ball on release, with your fingers pointed at 10 o'clock (in other words, point your fingers at the pindeck of the lane immediately to your left (for a right hander) and oppisite for lefty's.

I also find it helps to tilt the ball slightly outwards (away from your body), and it helps generate more sideroll, which is what gives that arcing backend reaction.

I go with ausbowler: Stay behind the ball and curl your fingers when the ball comes off your hand. you may also tame down foot and swing speed, because the ball will have more time on the lane to show its coverstock and core potential.

Do not force a hook with power! Use technique.

On your follow through, try to grab your ear and let the hand be faced towards the pins. Do NOT twist your hand at the moment of the release, because this will not result in a powerful, rolling ball with real side rotation, but just an asian-style spinner which twists down the lane, reacts late and is inclined to lose power when it reaches the pins, especially with aggressive coverstocks. You can notice such a spinner when the ball has a very low track with a small diameter.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
