First bowling ball purchase.

I am relatively new to the sport and I want to purchase my own ball and have it custom drilled. I have only used house balls between 10-12 lbs. Avg speed is around 16 mph and avg around 140 a game. This is all done with straight shots. I want to learn how to hook the ball, and have learned plastic coverstocks are really only for spares. I would appreciate recomendations for an entry level ball to learn to hook without being, too,expensive. Also, is it recommended that I go for a heavier ball if it's being custom drilled?

Here is the advice I think most on here will give you.  Go find a good pro shop.   Let them watch you bowl and then they will talk to you about the next steps you need to take.  There are too many variables for anyone on here to make a suggestion as to which ball you should buy.

Would like to add - steer away from the shop that will sell you the top of the line balls. Especially of you are a beginner. Top of the line balls generally require more skills to use them properly.

I feel most companies have great entry level pieces. My entry level ball (Rack Attack Solid) has a spot in my bag and sees action almost every time out.

And if there are multiple Pro Shops in your general area, ask around for recommendations.  They are not all equal.  I drive an hour each way to have balls drilled for my son and me.  The more local shops in my area are next to worthless.

If the operator does not first ask to you bowl before looking to sell and drill something for you, move along.  You want to get started on the right foot.  A badly drilled ball that doesn't match your game will do more harm than good.

John, I am confused because past posts about the Cyclone report the different colored balls aren't the same. They do have the same cover, but their finished covers are different , thus the balls all perform different, anyhow that is what has been reported here in the past. True or not, I have no idea, just saying what has been posted in the past.

I checked through all the Cyclones on the Ebonite website and they all show GB 10.7 coverstock, 4000 Abralon® W/Powerhouseâ„¢ Factory Finish, and Cyclone Torq core.  I've seen posts to the contrary also, but I'd think Ebonite would change the info on the website if they weren't all the same.  I've sold all of the various colors and everyone's been happy with them.  IMO it's the best ball for the price on today's market.  --  JohnP

When I returned to the game of bowling over a decade ago, into the modern age of bowling balls, I was suckered by the shop into getting a $239 ball. Then another shop owner sold me a used wicked for $90 which had over 30 games on it.

So do your research.
