Geting the Ball to hook

OK here is a question that has ben puzzling me I go out and go bowling I can get the ball to hook the first game and maybe a half then I start having trouble is this maybe from me doing something wrong or is this a case of the lane drying up what are your thoughts

If you are using a dull oil absorbing ball --- then ball may be burning up---If you have a shiny ball and bowling with people using plastic balls---chances are oil carrydown and ball not reacting on the backend

Sorry I forgot to include this I am using a Columbia 300 Scout reactive and a Columbia 300 Scout urethane hi flare.

Using those balls I would guess to say that the oil carry down is causing the breakpoint to be too far down the lane not giving the ball enough time to react.

Try scuffing one of the balls and see if that helps.

Another possibility is that you have a poor release - coming around the ball instead of staying behind it, so that the ball spins on a rather low track and never gets to finish well.

Have a coach check your game, or post a video of yours from behind, so that your relasing hand can be seen. This should solve a lot about your problem's origin.

I think my problem was I was throwing the ball to hard. I have gotten myself to relax and slow down and now am seeing more of a hook it is not a big hook but I am seeing a hook. And talking to a few people it my be just how the ball was drilled. I am going to go to another Pro shop and talk to a guy there

Most likely from my experience is the oil pattern has changed.  Many times when I bowl with my friends and they use house balls, that cause the oil to change.  You just have to keep adjusting to each pattern and eventually you will get the hang of it.

Yes, house balls easily create carrydown in the back end, so that the ball might start to slip through the breakpoint (esp. polished pieces). Best option is to move feet and target to find a clear line, or switch to a ball that offers more friction, e. g. a matte piece or something with particle., that will bite through the carrydown.

Ok well I am using a Columbia 300 Scout reactive what is your recommendation

Ball encounters friction - might hook if the ball speed does not over-power the surface prep, axis tilt and rev rate.

Ever think about Norm Dukes' choice of spare ball?  Any ball can be rolled pretty much straight...ball speed, surface prep, axis tilt and rev rate....and any ball can hook - if the lanes are not oiled from the foul line to the pin deck.

Self teaching is fun because we enjoy the struggle to understand.  As far I know the top bowlers use the extra eyes that a coach can provide.

Reading the instruction is not enough.  A real coach can really help you more  than any number of books and instructional videos.
