Hello from new bowler (wannabe) :D
« on: November 28, 2011, 06:45:01 AM »
Hi all,

I'm Robert from Croatia.

I started with bowling about a month ago, just for fun, but on last Saturday I joined a club and had first training. It was a bit hilarious because I was struggling to score over 100, when people around me scored a "little" bit higher. But what could I expect from first practice, anyway.
I invested in bowling shoes (Brunswick), got myself an Ebonite Maxim from my coach for start. Fingertip drilled, but holes are a bit big for my fingers.

Now comes a headscratcher for me. I can choose between brand new DV8 Reckless and brand new DV8 Misfit. Which one would be better for beginning bowler who never threw hook before? Would a Reckless be a bit overkill as a first reactive ball for beginner?

Cheers

If it were me, I'd go Misfit...it's going to be much stronger than the Maxim, and will probably give you more forgiveness as you learn the game.

If I may ask...where in Croatia?

I agree with Ray here.  The Reckless is going to be stronger than the Maxim, but would most likely give you more forgiveness as you are learning.  It's a good all around ball for most conditions.  The Misfit is similar to the Maxim and will overlap.

The best advice however is to work with a good pro shop and let them watch you throw the ball.  Based on this, the driller can even find other choices which may even be better.  Also, many drillers are coaches and can help you work on your game as well.  Good luck to you and let us know how things go.

Thanks for Your answers.

I'm from Varazdin, but currently live, study and bowl in Zagreb.

The problem is that our pro shop is in "grey" zone and is not currently operating. And whole situation is very funny because I'm "teaching" my coach about bowling stuff. He just bowls and doesn't care too much about world around him. He also doesn't speak english, so I was spending many hours on-line, absorbing bowling related knowledge like a sponge (even got myself Bowling for Dummies ). So, I pretty much have theoretical knowledge about different layouts, PIN to PAP-s, MoRich dual angle system, sym vs. asym cores, coverstocks, oil patterns and so on.

But when it comes to choosing bowling ball for me, I'm way too big newbiee. Main problem is that he strongly recommends me to buy Reckless, but I don't know if I have the skills to handle ball like Reckless. He bowls with Brunswick Fuze Igniter and I saw that Fuze Igniter and Misfit have similar figures.

I'm really not sure what to do.

I can definitely address the issue about fit.  Since the holes were drilled slightly bigger than you may have wanted, you can always use fitting tape on your fingers to help.  Here are some of the products from Turbo:  http://www.turbogrips.com/products_tape.php

The fitting tape is worn around your fingers and it can help make the fit much better for what you need.  If you are having issues with the thumb size, you can still use the fitting tape.  However, I find that the Storm Thunder Tape works best for me.  http://www.bowling.com/products/storm-bowlers-tape-white-textured-3-4--500-roll.htm

There are multiple types you can choose from for the thumb.  However, I like using the white textured tape the most since it helps give me a better feel coming out of the thumb compared to the black smooth tape.  There have been times in cold winters where I've used up to 4 pieces in the thumb just to get the consistant feel.  However, right now, no tape is being used because the thumb is perfect.

Tape is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to change the feel of the bowling ball.

Confusion is part of the game... By the way: the numbers do not tell much, since the coverstock properties and the surface prep are other major factors. In this case, the Igniter is a special piece with a relatively hard shell: it skids well and is rather a sharp ball, while the Misfit is a better all-rounder (and IMHO a very good ball to start with when you want to play with a fingertip drilling).

Hi all!

And thanks again for all the answers and tips. I'll see again with my coach which ball should I buy, but I will have your tips in mind when choosing.

I'll go bowling tomorrow and will post my figures. ;)

cheers
