Help with ball selection
« on: September 06, 2016, 09:53:53 AM »
Hello, new to the site. Been bowling open play forever, just joined my first league starting September 14th. Anyway, i average in the 140's. Been throwing a Hammer Black Widow Red Legend pearl for a year now (before this was a columbia 300 wicked b/r/t which i loved), and i am very inconsistent with it. If a throw it like i normally bowl, it goes darn near straight. Only way i can get it to hook like i want is to slow it down to 9-10mph. but then it has no pin action. Thinking about another ball. I tried a friends Roto Grip Wreck it, and i like the way it rolls and i find it hits hard. I am leaning towards a Storm Alpha Crux, but worried it will be too aggressive for weekly league bowling and THS pattern. Looking for any opinions or other options to look into. Thanks.

In my opinion the thing you would most benefit by would be to get some lessons by a good coach. Followed by some practical practice.  Look for seminars as well with coaching, and sometimes these may have a special discount on a ball included in the pricing.

I do not know what area you live, but people on this site may be able to recommend a good coach if you want to go that route.

A new ball is not always the answer to better scores. Fundamentals and consistency should be what you should be looking for at this stage.

Good luck and welcome to a new part of the sport of bowling that we all enjoy.

Some good advice above.  You can usually have the Pro Shop Operator watch you roll some shots and help you with ball selection, too.

FYI, here is a picture from this past Sunday. I am "Joey", these frames are with my old Wicked. At this point i switched to the Hammer and finished with only a 151. My wicked is has some pretty deep gauges in it from bowling at a center that didnt keep up with their equipment, it's been long closed. We finally have another center that has just recently opened, so im getting back into it. Looking for a ball close in comparison with the old Wicked B/R/T.
