I try to use the same ball but move closer to the gutter, for a straight shot down-and-in. I try to get along with release adjustments from there (breaking back the wrist, adding side rotation for a longer sliding phase). Moving deep will hardly work well, if you have a dirty back end. Ball will probably lack recovery, and for really strong stuff the lanes tends to be too dry at that time, from my experience.
Switching to a milder ball will help, too - my Pure Hammer (5x5 above fingers, surface at 1.500 wet sanded) is a very good option for me in this situation.
