hi guys new to the game, have a rapid fire pearl storm, can some one help me with these questions, why when the ball hits the pocket,,right hander,  its going long, rotating then comes the snap turn, does the ball stop rotating and skid like into the pocket instead of the snap turn with rotation? is it that there is way to much oil or not enough oil??, and how does one determine if they are a cranker? tweener or stroker?? thanxs for anyhelp/ tips

Etch, an "ideal" strike hit has the ball rolling forward just a split second before it enters the pins. This is the moment of optimum momentum, when the forces of forward roll and the rotation you induce by hand through a fingertip release add together. It is also the instance when the core has finally migrated to its stable end axis, determined by the drilling and partly manipulated by the release. But that's just the ideal.

For a "good" shot, you should be able to determine 3 phases of the ball down the lane:
1) Skid through the heads
2) Hook, when the ball touches dry ground and the core and coverstock powers "unfold"
3) Roll - the "end phase" mentioned above.

If Phase 3 occurs too early, the ball loses hitting power - can be the result of too little oil, but also a too strong steup or too much surface. Also, if Phase 2 is delayed too much, the ball is still spinning and just does not have much hitting power (can occur on long oil). Many factors are involved, so it is hard to make a diagnosis from far.

thanxs for the reply dizzy, was losing faith in any replys after so many veiws and not one reply, i think i  understand what you are saying, my ball goes down long and rotating, then hits the back end, snap turn, hooking into the 1 3 pocket and then sometimes it just dies and slides with no rotation,(like a house ball) other times, she is a monster and pounds with a whole lot of rotation , i  will try to get some video of my game thanxs

I assume you are a beginner bowler when you post in this forum - do not lose faith in your ball or the reaction. From personal experience I can confirm that ball reactions can vary a LOT for a beginner, and most of these "spinning" reactions are created through topping the ball, which means that a player does not keep his/her hand well behind or at the side of the ball during the release, but rather breaks the wrist back and releases the ball pretty early. The player might impart revs and even put effort into it, but the ball just spins/slides and never gets into the necessary roll that unfolds its potential in the back end. Then add some lack of consistency, and you might get lost wondering why or how the ball hooks sometimes, sometimes not.

This could IMHO be a potential source for your trouble - and its almost natural. A video would be nice, though, or have an experienced player watch you on site.
